Joe Haden may not be reporting to training camp on time.
Despite his agent stating he has no intention of holding out, it appears unlikely that Cleveland Browns first-round pick Joe Haden will be at camp on time.

Rookies are scheduled to report to camp on Friday, but the Browns don’t even have second-round pick Montario Hardesty or third-rounder Colt McCoy signed yet.

PFT’s Mike Florio speculates that Hardesty and McCoy could get their deals done before rookies report. However, Haden’s inexperienced agent may slow the negotiating process.

Further, his deal could depend on what type of contract the Oakland Raiders give to their first-round pick, linebacker Rolando McClain.

McClain was selected with the eighth overall pick in the draft, one spot removed from Haden.

Last year the Raiders gave their first-round pick, Darrius Heyward-Bey, a five-year deal with $23.5 million guaranteed. McClain’s agents are well aware of that deal and are likely seeking a large guarantee for their client this year.

As Florio points out, it would be foolish for Haden not to wait for McClain to first striking his deal before finalizing his own.

That said, Haden failed to impress coaches in offseason workouts. Whether his slow progress impedes his contract value remains to be seen.

So, just like every other first-rounder, including the Steelers, he may or may not be signed before camp starts. Man, these reporters sure are up on things.

i think the angle of this story is how the idiot raiders are affecting the signing of everyone at every position. d. revis, m. crabtree, kickers like j. reed.

now dez bryant's (24th pick overall) agent (eugene parker who was also crabtree's) is demanding top 10 pick $$$ for him.

Hopefully, this will be the last year (and that's probably the biggest reason for the lack of 1st round signings) of this bullcrap. They need to pass a rookie salary scale based on pick selection and make all of this "negotiation" stuff history. Rookies have no business making more than proven veterans at thier positions. Give the money to the guys that have actually earned it!

There's a very simple way to give big contracts to rookies:

Escalator clauses. A rookie contract should be league minimum his first season, a signing bonus of no more than $5M (seriously, budget your fucking millions and don't blow it on dumb shit like 30 cars, 3 houses, and a ton of diamond clad chains and shit). Anything more than that would be brought on bonuses for playing time and stats.

Example:

QB - 70% of snaps = $2Mil, Fewer than 7 INT's in that 70+% = $3Mil, 25+ TD's = $6Mil

This way the QB is getting paid for his performance....unlike JaMarcus Russell did in his few years with the Raiders.

In Haden's case, CB:

80% snaps played = $3.5Mil, 8+ INT's on the season = $5Mil, 50+ tackles = $4Mil

:amen: I completely agree, as I said in another post somewhere here, the rookie salary needs to be taken care of, it's getting out of control. Here we have these rookies making so much money and they haven't even done anything yet. They could become a complete bust like Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russel or they could be the next Peyton Manning or Jerome Bettis. I say lower the rookie salary or if they owners don't want to do it, let NFL get involved.

Totally agree. It's completely asinine that a QB who didn't even play that much his senior year because of injuries will get around $50 million dollars in guaranteed money.
JMHO, but I don't think ANY pro athlete, including LeBron, Manning or Tiger, is worth that.

A rookie salary is desperately needed. It is annoying watching people who haven't even played a down demand so much money while you have proven veterans get a ridiculously lower salary.
