Holdouts in pro football are nothing new, even if they became more common when the zeroes on the left side of the decimal point in an NFL paycheck escalated from three — for much of the sport’s early existence — to five during the Joe Namath era.

Hard to believe, but Namath’s 1965 rookie contract with the New York Jets was considered so exorbitant that it spawned a book, “The $400,000 Quarterback.” These days, that won’t even cover a season’s luxury box rental in some stadiums.
So when Steelers receiver Mike Wallace finally ends his pay-me-the-money absence and reports to the team, probably within the next few days, he might have a sympathetic if unspoken supporter in longtime defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau.

Forty-five years ago, at the same time Carl Yastrzemski’s magical Triple Crown season was ongoing in Boston and the Summer of Love in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district was inspiring schoolgirls nationwide to weave flowers into their hair, LeBeau was an NFL holdout himself..........

A few months before the Packers and Cowboys met in the famous Ice Bowl championship game on New Year’s Eve and the first Super Bowl was played, LeBeau withheld his services from the Detroit Lions for 24 days. They fined their star cornerback $100 each day, or a total of $2,400 — almost enough to buy a new Ford Mustang.

Talk about a different world...
