Last week we speculated that Mike Wallace might end his holdout this week, maybe as early as today . I've been told he's already in town

Source: Wallace to return to Steelers this weekend

By Ed Bouchette / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers expect that Mike Wallace will arrive back in Pittsburgh this weekend and sign his one-year contract after they return from their third preseason game in Buffalo, multiple sources told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The Steelers play Saturday night in Buffalo. Presumably Wallace would be eligible to play in their final preseason game against Carolina Aug. 30 at Heinz Field, but whether he will or not remains unknown. The Steelers have off on Sunday after their game against Buffalo and will have only two real days of practice before they finish up the preseason against the Panthers.

However, reporting this weekend would give the Pro Bowl wide receiver two weeks to practice and prepare for the regular-season opener in Denver Sept. 9. It also could reopen negotiations on a multiple-year deal between Wallace and the Steelers, talks that ended when he did not report for the start of training camp July 25. The Steelers have a long-standing policy of not negotiating contracts once the regular-season begins. So if Wallace signs his one-year tender Sunday or Monday, it would give them less than two weeks to work on a multiple-year deal with him.

Wallace tells Steelers teammates he'll report this weekend

I could be wrong here but I have to wonder how much of this is just him wanting to sit out training camp. I don't think that's the right decision when you have a new offensive co-ordinator and his actions have not endeared me to him, but all will be forgiven if he can produce on the field to the tune of what his contract is worth.

I will be glad to get this drama over once and for all!!!

Mike Wallace will be back ...

The mood of the Steelers' locker room has definitely changed a great deal over the past couple days when it comes to when holdout receiver Mike Wallace will report and sign his restricted free agent tender. Players were talking about "when" he comes back. Now they are talking about "knowing" when he is coming back -- which will be either Sunday or Monday. By coming in then, Wallace will have missed the entire preseason. He will have to sit out three days to get "acclimated" to the game. That will bring him to next week's game against Carolina. When the Steelers resume action after cutting down to 53, they will begin to prepare for their Week 1 game against Denver. Seems like that has been the plan all along for Wallace.

Well, maybe, but if so I wouldn't consider it a very smart move. He still has 16 regular-season games to go, so injury is basically luck of the draw.

16 games for which he hasn't practiced or learned the new playbook, it should be pointed out. If I were him, I'd be a lot more worried about THAT affecting my free-agent value because I had an off year. Maybe he's just super-confident. I hope he can back it up.

I agree with this. It's not a bad move when you have to look out for your family. He probably just made the safest play he could in regards to locking up a larger contract later. A very conservative move if you ask me. Aren't there a lot of conservatives in here? Or are you all liberals? ;)

You know, that just may be exactly the point of the whole thing for him. We were always told that when you don't go 100% at all times, it is much easier to get injured. Who goes 100% throughout training camp? Heck, many times the coaches want you to go less than that - pull up before you hit, etc. etc.

Excellent point X-term.

Wallace to sign tender Tuesday

SteelersXtreme.com

Finally, there's going to be a tender moment between Mike Wallace and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

After almost an entire off-season of drama, speculation, rumors, and conflicting reports, Wallace will finally end his holdout with the Steelers on Tuesday and will sign his 1-year, $2.74 million tender offer, according to Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL Network. Earlier today, Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review also posted on Twitter that Wallace would be returning Tuesday.

After he signs the tender offer, Wallace will be able to return to the negotiating table with the Steelers' front office and attempt to secure a long-term contract with the team before the start of the regular season. The Steelers historically do not negotiate contracts after the regular season starts, so the Pro Bowl receiver will have until the first game of the 2012 season, Sept. 9, to sign a new deal; otherwise, he'll be playing for his tender amount and will become an unrestricted free agent after the season.

I think there is a kind of logic to the hold out and I'll be a bit more specific. If he had signed his tender before camp and they continued to work on a long term deal throughout, the Steelers have no incentive to get the deal done until the very last second before the season starts (when they stop negotiating ). If tragedy happens to strike and Wallace gets injured during the pre-season, the Steelers could decide whether he was worth a long term deal or not without being out any guaranteed money. Since the Steelers' best offer wouldn't be on the table until the last second no matter what, it makes sense that Wallace would want the shortest possible window between when he signs the tender and the last day of the pre-season, because an injury during that window could be devastating financially for him.

I agree. If the reports of the 50mil/5yr deal and only 8 mil guaranteed are true, I have to side with Wallace on this one. I think he is a player that deserves about 20 mil guaranteed. The 50mil/5yr is about right, maybe 55mil/5yr.
