Just thought we'd use this to keep everyone up to date on the Altoona Curve(Pirates AA Affiliate).

So far this year the team has been MUCH more improved compared to 2009. Year to date the Curve are currently 33-17 6 games ahead of the Richmond Flying Squirrels(Formerly the Connecticut Defenders who moved and eventually became part of the Eastern League Western Division).

Standings in the Eastern League(As of May 30th)
Eastern Division
New Hampshire Fisher Cats 31 20 -
Trenton Thunder 29 20 1.0
Portland Sea Dogs 25 23 4.5
Binghamton Mets 24 25 6.0
Reading Phillies 20 28 9.5
New Britain Rock Cats 14 35 16.0

Western Division
Altoona Curve 33 17 -
Richmond Flying Squirrels 27 23 6.0
Bowie Baysox 25 25 8.0
Harrisburg Senators 25 25 8.0
Erie SeaWolves 24 26 9.0
Akron Aeros 20 30 13.0

Players to Watch:Alex Presley has shown he is capable of being part of the Pirates future. He currently leads the Eastern League with a Batting Average of .377 and has 5 Home Runs with 37 RBIs. In a game against Akron I beleive, he managed to break Adam Hyzdu's record for most RBIs in a game. He is pretty good on the field with his arm, but still has room to improve.

Bryan Morris was just recently brought up from high class A Bradenton. He had an ERA of 0.74. The Lowest in all of Baseball.(at least Minors) He makes his debut at Blair County Ballpark tomorrow against Reading.
Early Signs of a Playoff Birth? Still too early in the season. If they can keep the bulk of this team together, they should make it and possibly win the league. Many of these players were playing for Lynchburg last year who won the Carolina League Title. This team has the making of a Championship team and could bring home the Curve their first Eastern League Championship in the team's 12 year history. (Last time they played for the EL Title was 2004 in a series they lost 3-0 against New Hampshire when they won the Southern Division)

Curve Schedule for the Month of June
June 1-3 @ New Britain
June 4-6 @ New Hampshire
June 8-10 Harrisburg
June 11-13 New Britain
June 15-17 @ Trenton
June 18-20 @ Richmond
June 22-24 Portland
June 25-27 Bowie
June 28-30 @ Binghamton

Altoona doing so well is a VERY good sign for the Pirates. Morris has been absolutely dominant all season between Bradenton and Altoona, which is an even better sign because they desperately need a top of the rotation starter. Danny Moskos has also done well as the closer, and he had damn well better continue that considering he was drafted instead of Matt Wieters. Sorry, I'm STILL bitter about that. :frusty:

I would not have minded seeing him in Altoona. I think that would have helped in 2008 When the team was just flat out dead.

I went and saw the Curves when they played the Senators in HBG and Strasburg was pinching... I was happy to see he lost the game.. :)

The funny part is that game was his last AA Start.

Yep.. The National's said he was going to start against Cincy and that game sold out and now they say he will start against us the June 8th - 10th series... Sucks to be the the people that bought tickets for the Cincy game.. lol I hope Lincoln makes him look like nothing when he comes up soon... I can't believe Strasburg's National baseball card is worth $17,000 already..

Updating The Curve and the rest of the Eastern League
EAST
Trenton 52 34 - N/A
New Hampshire 52 35 0.5 N/A
Binghamton47 40 5.5 51
Reading 43 42 8.5 48
Portland 42 44 10.0 46
New Britain 24 63 28.5 28

WEST
Altoona 53 33 - N/A
Bowie 45 42 8.5 N/A
Akron 43 43 10.0 55
Harrisburg 41 46 12.5 52
Richmond 41 46 12.5 52
Erie 36 51 17.5 47

MOST IMPROVED: Chase d'Arnaud showed great signs of being the most improved player last month after struggling heavily at the plate for the last couple of months. It's a relief to see who is probably the Pirates Shortstop of the future is showing signs that he could end up being on pace to arrive in Indy next year.

BEST PLAYER(S) YEAR TO DATE: Jared Hughes has been showing signs he could end up being in the rotation having gone 10-5 despite a 4.21 ERA. This starting rotation however in more recent games against Binghamton has been getting beat up. They have lost 3 out of 4 and will play Richmond tonight. Hector Gimenez has been consistant on the field and at the plate especially since Moskos and Pressley have been promoted.

NEEDS WORK:The team received in the Moskos/Pressley move, Brandon Jones, who right now in my book should be sent to High Class-A Bradenton. He DOGGED it to getting a Baseball in Monday's 6-1 Victory over Binghamton. His effort and attitude may need a change.

Schedule For July (Scores are in order of their games)
1-4 @ Reading W 7-2, W 6-2, L 7-4, L 6-4
5-8 Binghamton W 6-1, L 9-6, L 9-6, L 4-3
9-12 Richmond
13-14 ALL STAR BREAK (Metro Bank Park, Harrisburg, PA)
15-18 @ Harrisburg
19-21 @ Akron
22-25 Trenton
26-28 @ Erie
29-Aug. 1 @ Richmond

PLAYOFFS FOR THE EASTERN LEAGUE
The Curve will once again for the first time be in contention for a playoff spot since Walker and Cutch were brought up in a jerk move by Dave Littlebrain in the middle of the 2007 season(Ultimately the team missed it, and I felt they may have had a chance to compete for the EL Title)

DIVISION PLAYOFFS
Top 2 Teams from Each Division will make the playoffs
Teams will play a Best of 5 Series
Games will work 2-2-1

CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
Division Winners Meet in a Best of 5 Series
Games will work 2-3
If they resume the format based upon which division had home field in 2009, The Western Division(Former Southern Division) will host games 1-2 and the East (Former Northern Division) will host games 3-5 as necessary.
NOTE: Divisions were renamed, so I am not sure how that will work. Last Column is that team's elimination number which is not factored into the tiebreaking procedures. See EL Website for procedure.

50 years ago the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Yankees to complete the biggest upset in the history of Baseball.

50 years later the Pittsburgh Pirates are busy beating the New York Yankees again at the Double-A Level.

ALTOONA CURVE 2010 EASTERN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS

Signs that there is hope for the Pirates coming. It's just a matter of how it is sustained.
