On a trip to Israel, Mitt Romney is trying to win over a tiny sliver of a small _ but powerful _ section of the American electorate. President Barack Obama is doing the same at home.

Why? Jews are among the most liberal of all voting blocs. The GOP is not looking to win this vote, they are looking to chip away at it. McCain was soundly beaten 74-23% (I guess a few % voted Green or Libertarian or something). The most recent poll I saw had Obama up about 68-30%. A 7% jump in one voting bloc (and Jews vote heavily) is significant.
This election is really going to come down to small margins in a bunch of different demo's, and the bad, bad, bad news for Hopey is the massive indifference and apathy amongst younger voters. McCain was slaughtered in the 18-29 demo (66% voted for Hopey, the largest percentage for one candidate ever) and voter turnout was the second highest ever, second only to the first time 18-year-olds could vote in '72. The kids won Hopey the election last time, and if they stay home this time, he'll probably lose. But that's why small swings in a few demos matter so much.

Apparently the media hasn't figured out that American politicians don't bend over backwards to support Israel in search of the Jewish vote, they do it in search of the Evangelical vote.

That's silly...the evangelical vote is not voting for Obama no matter what. If there was any chance of it (and there never really was anyway) he shattered it by endorsing gay marriage.
This is 90% trying to erode away a bit of Jewish vote, 10% solidifying the base.

I think mobilizing Evangelical support bears more importance in Republican primaries.

Of course...they are ALL voting GOP. Romney may be energizing the base here a tad, but, by and large, this is about chipping away at that Jewish vote. This IS also a little bit getting off on the right foot for a Romney President. Israel is, above all, an important military ally in the always unstable Mid-East. I thought it was rather obvious, but, well, whatever...
