A concussion-related lawsuit filed against the NFL by 73 former players, including former Raiders star Ken “The Snake” Stabler, questions why Steelers linebacker James Harrison is allowed to keep playing despite repeat offenses that endanger fellow players.

The lawsuit, filed Monday in Philadelphia, is one in a series of such legal actions nationally in which more than 2,700 former players are seeking relief from what they contend is the league’s slowness in dealing with the dangers of concussions and brain trauma.

Mentioned prominently are a number of in-game incidents from 2009 on, after a Boston University study revealed that multiple former NFL players died prematurely after developing boxer-like brain damage.

The players argue in the suit that “recidivist violators” such as Harrison, a former NFL Defensive Player of the Year and one of the league’s most punishing hitters, shouldn’t be allowed to keep playing. In legal terms, a recidivist is a repeat offender. The court filing mentions five illegal hits by Harrison on quarterbacks over three seasons.............

What a complete load of shit. It just sounds like some sour grapes on the former players' part along with a specific bias against the Steelers.

Ironic that this mentions Stabler by name while damning Harrison. That's laughable, considering who some of HIS teammates were. Tatum in particular wouldn't make it in today's game - not the way he played. What hypocrisy.

And sorry, but a part of me questions the motive of a guy who's flat broke and owes the IRS just over a quarter of a mil (Stabler).

This is such a joke. Repeat offender? That makes it sound like James Harrison is 100% INTENDING to give people concussions and we all know that isn't true. For the most part if you "give" a person a concussion you aren't the only reason it happened.

The player being hit lowering their head matters and actually quite frankly some bad luck has to happen because people can get hit a lot without ever getting an actual concussion.

Training camp isn't even a day old, and already the pot shots at Harrison and the Steelers are being taken.

And just remember folks - Dirt Dawson signed off on this as well, which means he was OK with mentioning Harrison by name.

Hits by Harrison resulted in multiple players sustaining concussions, including Browns quarterback Colt McCoy last season and Browns receiver Mohamed Massaquoi in 2010. Harrison drew a one-game suspension for the helmet-to-helmet McCoy hit and a $75,000 fine and no suspension for the Massaquoi hit.

And yet Harrison arguably hit Cribbs even harder than either of them, but that was deemed legal. Anyone else see the problem here?

What about the staff in Cleveland for allowing Colt to be put back into the game? Seemed like his father was more pissed about that and rightfully so, but that won't get mentioned

I find the willingness to accept an induction into the H O F simultaneous with suing in effect your employer a blatant contradiction. I take no joy in Dawson's induction. Every NFL player understood the inherent risk of the game. 98% PLUS of the former players would play in the NFL again over the same number of years even if they had foreknowledge of their own personal injuries and condition. This is all about the opportunity to make more money. My emotional investment in this game decreases more and more. I suspect signs will be posted in the locker room stating "Playing footbal in the NFL can be hamrful to your health" Similar information will be posted on the side lines and on the back of each helmet to be seen each time it is placed on the players heads.

Yup, that's a great idea. Let's BAN the games hardest hitters.

Any former player that is suing the NFL over these hits are nothing, but a bunch of pussies (Sorry if I offend any ladies on here).

Stabler must have selective memory because, Like fan76 said Raider players like Tatum were brutal hitters. I'm surprised Ronnie Lott's name has not surfaced as well.

And predictably, like the complete douchebag he is, Florio piles on (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/07/26/james-harrison-doesnt-know-who-ken-stabler-is/). Yes, Mike, let's completely ignore the hypocrisy and out-and-out gall of Stabler suggesting Harrison should be tossed out of the league after sharing a locker room with the likes of Jack Tatum and George Atkinson and instead decry Harrison's "lack of knowledge of football history" by not knowing who Stabler is, even though he probably DOES know who he is and made the remark facetiously to show how insignificant Stabler's opinion is to him. :coffee:

Chances are because he isn't flat broke (http://www.usatoday.com/money/companies/management/2007-09-16-advice-lott_N.htm). Funny how every "big name" that seems to get named to this suit is having or has had significant money problems, and yes, that includes Dirt. For example, I have yet to see Roger Staubach join this suit, and he got his brains scrambled more than a few times during his career. Wonder if his current half-a-billion-dollar net worth has anything to do with it?

Before the question can be asked regarding whether current players care about former players, the first question is whether the current players even know who the former players are.

Earlier this week, a concussion lawsuit led by former Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler pointed to the fact that the league’s Super Bowl XLVI commercial regarding decades of changes to the rules fails to mention “how recidivist violators like James Harrison (who has had five illegal hits on quarterbacks in three seasons) are allowed to continue to play the game.”

Harrison should sue Stabler for defamation of character. Put him on the witness stand and play some tape of George Atkinson clothes lining players well away from the ball and ask him if he ever voiced concern at the time for the unnecessary danger he was subjecting fellow NFL player to at the time. Same with notorious cheap shot artist Jack Tatum who was also Stabler's teammate.

Funny how those guys weren't of concern to him, but James Harrison is.

These guys must have a strong opinion over this subject to be bring lawsuits onto the league....

Wait, why wouldn't they have sued years ago if this was a major issue to them?

Oh yeah they are just now seeing that they might be able to make some money off of this and are trying to play the victim card for money.

Carry on.

Fuck the Raiders.

Seeing how they seem to change the rules on illegal hits mid-fucking-game, how the hell can a defensive player who hits like a Mack truck keep up with the changes?

He got flagged for barely grazing the helmet of a fucking quarterback, while the Steelers QB gets his fucking nose BROKEN and there isn't a flag for anything.

Hey Ken, George Atkinson did this to Lynn Swann. Should he have been banned?
