No starters of the o-line that was in the Super Bowl against the Packers will be a starter in 2012!

Agreed. No ill will toward Scott as a person, but I'm glad he's been released.

Well, there's a shock.

Wallace must be close to signing.

Because until he signs either the tender or long-term deal, he isn't one of the 90 on the roster, right?

So since Starks was signed and that brought us to 90, someone will have to be released to let Wallace on. And as pointed out, it clears 2.2 million of cap space.

Sucked as an LT...was "ok" as a RT...not a starter (unless a team has players worse than him at RT). But I do wish him well...he'll probably catch on somewhere.

Nice ass block!

Though I am surprised Scott did not get flagged (or fined) for roughing the passer on that one...

No, but with the cap clearing, they have more room now for Wallace. I believe they were at 3.6m before Starks signed. Don't know what Max signed for, but I hope it's less than the 2.2 mil that Scott just freed up. Big Snack may not be far behind.

Somewhere Terrell Suggs has to be disappointed. He loved going up against Scott he was pretty much guaranteed to beat him for at least three sacks on Ben and even a strip sack in the mix.

Like others said, nothing against Scott. I'm sure he's a good guy, but he's a lousy tackle.

I had thought it was posted earlier at around $800,000 for one year.

So the Steelers have about 5mil now under the cap. Still might not be enough, because DeCastro is still not signed. Got to figure he will be in the 1.4 to 1.8 mil per year.

You're looking at around 1.3 against this season. Chandler Jones at 21 is going to count 1.4 (1 million signing bonus + 390K base). So a little less for DeCastro at 24.

So you'll have ~3.7 million to play around with. I doubt the team wants to use up all that in case of an emergency so they're probably hoping for nothing less than a 2.9 cap hit. That's tough to do if you're going to put in a hefty signing bonus.

They may try to structure it similar to Vincent Jackson's deal. He got 5/55 but it's really a 2/28. First two years fully guaranteed with the remainder of the contract basically being option bonuses. Not sure if Wallace will go for that because you want that guaranteed signing bonus and the base salary is going to be a problem.

Starks signed for the veteran minimum. I think the actual cash is @$825K, but the cap hit is @$605k. As for where they were, it was somewhere in the $3.6-$3.8M range. With the $2.2M, it pushes them near $6M. They really have more than enough to sign Wallace and DeCastro. Shea McClellin and Chandler Jones were both drafted ahead of DeCastro. Their signing bonuses and first year salaries have the 2012 cap hits under $1.5M. So, if you take out $1.5M for DeCastro, that leaves $4.5M in open space, plus Wallace's restricted tag number (which is counted against the cap even though it is not signed and it is $2.7M). The Steelers have $7.2M in open space to sign Wallace to a deal.

I would think the hold up would be in structuring the deal in a way so it does not pinch them in 2013 as well.

I would also add, do not be shocked if they bring Jon Scott back for the veteran minimum once he gets little interest in the free agent market. Then, you let Essex and Scott compete. Much rather have guys compete than hand them jobs.

Why bring back someone who can only play ONE position (and not great at that one) and waste even more money to compete with the guy who is much better and can play ALL 5 OL spots. They have enough guys on the roster to compete/etc.

I have yet to see Essex compete at the center spot and until he does, not buying that he plays all 5 spots. He can barely play the others. It is not like Essex is stellar at any position. He plays guard and tackle. Scott plays both tackle positions. He was a RT in Detroit and Buffalo in some instances. So, not sure who you are trying to sell on that one.

In addition, right now, the available bodies at tackle heading into training camp are Adams, Gilbert, Essex, and Jolly. Chris Scott was moved inside, he could see some time at tackle in camp. Essex is still listed as a guard. Colon is a guard now. So, the true tackles on roster right now are the 4 listed and Jolly really has no shot.

As for wasting even more money, you hand him the veteran minimum if he goes unsigned. If he fails to win a final roster spot, the cost is $0. Please explain how that is more money.

If you think those 4 OTs are enough to compete when they currently have 3 centers (Pouncey, Legursky, Lee) and 6-7 guards (Colon, DeCastro, Foster, Beachum, Malecki, Scott, and Essex).

Why would anyone be worried about a zero cost camp body?

Essex started at center against Jacksonville and played really well. He's also gotten a lot of time in practice there. I'm sure the team wouldn't hesitate to use him there again if they had to.

Forgot that he played at center. But, it really does not change the crux of my statement. We are loaded inside. Piles of bodies. We lack people outside and Scott would not cost them anything if he is added and does not make the roster. I am not stating they will re-sign him, but it is not out of the realm of possibility either. His release was due to his contract. They thought enough of him to make him the starting LT last season. It is not like the Steelers feel he cannot play.

In addition, with Essex cutting so much weight, how do we know he has maintained his functional strength? He could get pushed around and may not be worth keeping. Hard to say until they put the pads on.

The more I look at that GIF of the ass block, the more I cringe on how embarrassing that was. He was flat footed, lunged forward against the all time spinning rusher, and just got embarrassed that game. There was other plays where Freeney literally launched him back because Jon couldnt hold his weight. Good luck elsewhere, but your services are no longer needed here.
