TRENDING: Poll: Palin hot amongst Republicans, others not so much

Washington (CNN) – For many Democrats in Washington, a Sarah Palin presidential run would be a dream come true.

As their thinking goes, Palin's popularity among Republican base voters in early primary states would be enough to swamp the rest of the 2012 field and vault the conservative firebrand to the GOP nomination.

But in a general election, her standing among independent and swing voters, which began to crater in the closing weeks of the 2008 presidential race, might be too much to overcome.

New (admittedly early) polling data suggests that very scenario could play out if she decides to seek the White House.

According to a new Gallup survey, 76 percent of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Palin - the highest rating among any of the presumed presidential candidates. The former Alaska governor also maintains the strongest name recognition of any potential candidate, while only 20 percent of Republicans view her unfavorably.

Palin is trailed by Mike Huckabee (a 65 percent favorable rating), Newt Gingrich (64 percent) and Mitt Romney (54 percent). Bobby Jindal, who has yet to signal any serious 2012 intentions, had 45 percent favorable rating among Republicans.

Among all Americans, though, Palin's numbers are upside down. More Americans view her in a negative light (47 percent) than a positive one (44 percent). What's more, only nine percent of Americans haven't formed an opinion of the former Alaska governor, making it difficult for her to correct that deficit.

Romney, meanwhile, appears to have repaired his image among Americans since the height of the contentious Republican primary battle in February 2008, when his unfavorable rating was at 46 percent. Now, 36 percent of Americans have a favorable view of Romney, with 28 percent having an unfavorable view.

The Gallup poll surveyed 1,020 adults between July 8-11 and has a sampling error of +/- 4 percentage points. Several potential candidates, namely Tim Pawlenty, were not included in the survey.

I would think that a Palin nomination would guarantee a Democratic victory for the executive party. I doubt the RNC allows that to occure.

UPDATE: Sarah and Todd Palin said in a statement on NBC's "Today" show Tuesday that they want what's best for their children and that Bristol believes in "redemption and forgiveness." And it seems Bristol blames her mom for their initial breakup. In a newly released People interview (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20401622,00.html), Bristol says that had her mom not been a VP candidate, she and Levi would already be married and would never have split.
PREVIOUSLY: Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are engaged (http://www.usmagazine.com/healthylifestyle/news/exclusive-bristol-palin-levi-johnston-are-engaged-2010147), and they've shared the news on the cover of Us Weekly, seen below. They have not shared the news with Bristol's mom Sarah Palin, who has mocked (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/16/sarah-palin-on-oprah-talk_n_359812.html) Levi as "Ricky Hollywood" and poked fun at his "aspiring porn" career.

Bristol tells the glossy, "It is intimidating and scary just to think about what her reaction is going to be. Hopefully she will jump on board."

i love how everyone always quotes sarahs "executive experience".

she was the governor of alaska for about 2 1/2 years (about a year of which was spent campaigning, doing book tours, and fighting civil law suits).

its freaking alaska. her executive experience is akin to a kid managing a 7-11 and slinging slurpees for a year and all of a sudden thinking they can run IBM.

even after obama rules this entire nation for 4 years, the dense republicans will still chant that sister sarah has more experience (and actually believe it).

I don't see anything in there that says she hates her mom. And saying they'd have gotten married already if it weren't for the campaign isn't the same thing as blaming her mom--the media spotlight caused some problems, as did Levi's lack of maturity. The porn-career mockery came after they broke up and Levi posed for Playgirl.

As far as beating Obama, if he does as good a job over the next two years as he has so far, any Republican will beat him. And Palin is a lot better than the other assclowns thinking about running. (Santorum, Jeb, Haley Barbour, Flip Romney).

As opposed to being a community organizer and a first-term, no-show Senator? Now THAT qualifies someone to run the country!

Hate Obama all you want, but surely you can recognize his intelligence and her lack thereof.

She's a zero upstairs, and I'd be scared as hell to see her elected into office.

I say keep her Alaska so that she can keep an eye on Russia. :rolleyes2:

Doesn't matter how book-smart O is because he's grossly incompetent. He's consistently wrong about everything (no need to rein in Fannie and Freddie, the spendulus package will keep unemployment under 8 percent, the Iraq troop surge won't work, etc.) And all he did about the oil spill was actively hinder every mitigation effort while offering no ideas of his own.

If anything should scare you it's a second term for Obama.

she basically told all her voters "thanks... but fuck you. i am off to earn some real cash and focus on the fame and fortune i deserve and have 'earned'".

I much rather have Palin because she believes in America's greatness (unlike Obama), is not trying to turn it into a socialist disaster (unlike Obama), cares about the american people and what they want and less about what socialist foreign countries want america to be (unlike Obama), and is not a spineless coward and appeaser (unlike Obama).
Choosing between Palin and Obama is basically choosing between freedom and tyranny, between a leader with principles and a plan for a stronger America and a Chicago union thug, seriously are some of you people watching too much leftwing propoganda channels?

Don't like Palin for a candidate at all. It's not that I think she'd do a worse job than Obama (not many could), but I don't think she's fit to handle the pressures of presidency. She's proven that by resigning as governor because of numerous ethics complaints. There are only 3 states with higher population than Alaska, and she couldn't handle it. How is she supposed to be able to handle a whole country?

Give one example of how you think she is corrupt?

The suddenness of Sarah Palin's resignation Friday raises the question about whether Palin is leaving to avert a major scandal. One logical place to start looking is the affair that has Alaska political circles buzzing: an alleged scandal centered around a building contractor, Spenard Building Supplies, with close ties to Palin and her husband, Todd.

Many political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators have been seizing paperwork from SBS in recent months, searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home on pristine Lake Lucille in 2002. The home was built just two months before Palin began campaigning for governor, a job which would have provided her enhanced power to grant building contracts in the wide-open state.

SBS has close ties to the Palins. The company has not only sponsored Todd Palin's snowmobile team, according to the Village Voice's Wayne Barrett, it hired Sarah Palin to do a statewide television commercial in 2004.

Though Todd Palin told Fox News he built his Lake Lucille home with the help of a few "buddies," according to Barrett’s report, public records revealed that SBS supplied the materials for the house. While serving as mayor of Wasilla, Sarah Palin blocked an initiative that would have required the public filing of building permits—thus momentarily preventing the revelation of such suspicious information.

Just months before Palin left city hall to campaign for lieutenant governor, she awarded a contract to SBS to help build the $13 million Wasilla Sports Complex. The most expensive building project in Wasilla history, the complex cost the city an additional $1.3 million in legal fees and threw it into severe long-term debt. For SBS, however, the bloated and bungled project was a cash cow.

coincidence ? maybe, but i doubt it. what are the odds that the palins choose the very same materials ( windows, etc) , that they used at the complex ?

word is she will select emmit "mushmouth" smith as her running mate.

After Sarah Palin's Twitter shoutout to William Shakespeare, the question arose -- what types of things would Palin say if she wrote like Shakespeare all the time?
Thanks to the minds of clever Tweeters, we're getting a glimpse of that today, with tweets ranging from heavily political to light-hearted and humorous based on popular Shakespeare quotes.
It all started with this tweet from Palin: "Ground Zero Mosque supporters: doesn't it stab you in the heart, as it does ours throughout the heartland? Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate."
But refudiate is not a word.
Palin deleted the tweet, posted a follow-up (http://twitter.com/SarahPalinUSA/status/18855185436) using 'refute' instead, and then addressed critics with this tweet (http://twitter.com/SarahPalinUSA/status/18863040998): ""Refudiate," "misunderestimate," "wee-wee'd up." English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!"
The subsequent chatter not only propelled #ShakesPalin to Twitter's trending topics, but led to a @ShakesPalin (http://twitter.com/shakespalin) Twitter account. Vote on the best #ShakesPalin tweets below and let us know great tweets we missed and your OWN Shakespearean Palin lines in the comments below.
