The Pittsburgh Steelers have used this offseason to groom running back Isaac Redman for the starting role. It's not how they planned to enter the year, but with Rashard Mendenhall still on the mend, Redman's promotion is quickly becoming a reality.

Mendenhall tore his anterior cruciate ligament in last year's regular season finale against the Cleveland Browns. Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert all but admitted he won't be back anytime soon.

Well, that's what Redman, Clay, Dwyer, Batch, and Rainey are for. Good thing we have them.

Figured this was going to happen. I still cannot wait to see Mendy back in uniform playing under our new OC and behind a new line.

You can never have too many RBs because they do go down throughout the course of the season. What the team will learn is as long as you have a running specialist for each down and a solid OL, you can flourish with RB by committee. You may not have sequential games where a feature RB domiinates other teams, but you can have flashes. On the other hand, you can rarely flourish with OL by committee much like the Jet's experiment of brining in all kinds at different positions not necessarily OL of FAs and expecting them to gel into a championship team.

This should come as a surprise to no one. The good thing is, if just one of the other guys beyond Redman turns out to be decent, we won't need Mendenhall at all. Just take a rest and get ready for next year, although in that case it would likely be with another team.

I am sure Redman is ready. Redman ran with more authority and danced around less than Mendenhall anyway

I don't think Redman alone would have a shot in hell of actually earning Mendenhall's job for any sustainable amount of time. However, that's a different story with Rainey in the mix. I believe the rookie has upside the likes of which we haven't seen in a ball carrier for quite a few years. The tandem of he and Redman should become effective enough to make letting Mendenhall walk a much easier pill to swallow.
