View Full Version : Ed Reed puts Harbaugh in tough situation

When the Baltimore Ravens' John Harbaugh was hired as head coach in January 2008, he said: "There are three important things in putting together a football team: No. 1 is the team, the second-most important thing is the team and the third-most important thing is the team."

Ed Reed, Pro Bowl safety and one of the most respected players in the locker room, is putting Harbaugh's mantra to the test by skipping the first day of the Ravens' mandatory minicamp Tuesday.

To make matters worse, Harbaugh said Reed wasn't excused from the minicamp and hasn't heard from the eight-time Pro Bowl player. "I have not communicated with Ed, so I'm not sure what the situation is on that," Harbaugh said after Tuesday's practice.

I don't think this is a sign that Reed is contemplating retirement -- again. But this is still a big issue. Harbaugh has to fine Reed. He has to discipline Reed for breaking the rules.

This is the toughest predicament that Harbaugh has faced in his four-plus years as Ravens coach. He doesn't want to upset one of the most respected players in the locker room. He doesn't want to alienate Reed when he's heading into the final year of his contract.

But, if this is about team and no player is above another, Harbaugh can't give Reed a pass on this. Under the collective bargaining agreement, Harbaugh can fine Reed up to $72,000 ($63,000 for missing the mandatory three-day minicamp and another $9,000 for not taking a physical before the workout) for blowing off the camp that everyone under contract is required to attend.

Wow - no spin from the Ravens homer Hensley there. Color me surprised.

It's a mandatory camp and Reed wasn't excused from it, therefore he should be fined.

Reed as always is looking to renegotiate his contract.

Ed Reed is looking to renegotiate his contract, as always. It's an every off-season thing.

Last month, Reed created a stir when he told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he was "not 100 percent committed right now to playing this year." Reed later clarified his comments, saying he plans on playing in 2012 and possibly beyond.

Reed, 33, has also been vocal in his displeasure over his contract situation. He is scheduled to make $7.2 million in the final year of a six-year, $44.4 million contract.

I think 7.2 million dollars is more than enough for a 33 year old player who's already hinted at retirement.

Ok gotta share this story with you guys...

I was in some hole in the wall bar last night to watch an embarassing stanley cup. I was wearing a Steeler Jersey( woodley)

I hear "Steelers suck!" yelled near my direction. And I ignore like I always do, because jealous people are stupid people and I was trying to enjoy myself. So few moments go by , me not reacting to the first one I here "Lamarr Woodley sucks" Now the guys is solidifying they are talking to me. So I turn smile and with one hand and one thumb in the air at his direction. ( nonverbally saying 6 rings please shut up really don't feel like having this conversation) but they insisted to come over to talk.

Keep in mind I just got there , and they were a little half in the bag... They come over and want to buy me 2 beers... For the the 2 losses the steelers had suffered to the ravens this year. I laughed and said sure free beer is the best tasting beer. I chose top shelf of course. Eventaully we had the talk... blah blah hines ward dirty, rapelisberger, blah blah... then we got to the current events.

"When your steelers implode this season I will be here to talk you so!"

I re-butted... So Ray Rice getting second helpings of a contract because of Flacco, Ray lewis aging , Terrell Suggs injuring himself playing hoops, and ed reed contemplating retirement would equate to stability??

I enjoyed those 2 beers , that is for sure...

You should have asked them how many Lombardi Trophies they won for that sweep this past season!

I think the biggest jam for Harbaugh here is that he can't whine to the refs about it.
