View Full Version : Harbaugh's comments on Manning now a "running joke" in league circles

More than a week after 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh declared that his team didn’t “pursue” or “flirt with” but merely “evaluated” quarterback Peyton Manning, folks throughout the NFL are getting a kick out the comments.

No one believes it. No one. As in not anyone.

Per a source with knowledge of the Peyton chase, no one should. And the total disbelief in league circles has made the issue a “running joke.”

The Niners didn’t simply kick Manning’s tires. There were in it until the very end. Though the Broncos, 49ers, and Titans were regarded as the finalists, it actually came down, we’re told, to Denver and San Francisco.

But the point isn’t to rub Harbaugh’s face in it (again). He’s one of our (or at least my) favorites coaches. He’ll will the team into being a contender every year he works for the 49ers. The point is that, elsewhere in the league, John Harbaugh’s younger brother lost some significant style points on this one.

The real question is whether Jim Harbaugh lost any credibility in his own locker room, specifically with his own quarterback. With Smith being represented by Tom Condon, who also represents Peyton Manning, Smith has fairly immediate access to the truth. Even without the ability to talk to Condon, Smith is smart enough to see what was going on, when it was going on.

The question is whether there will be any discernible impact on the coach-quarterback relationship as a result of the pursuit of Peyton and the post hoc effort to pretend it didn’t happen

Why did Harbaugh even have to bring this up? Is Smith that insecure?

Not sure why he tried to concoct this. Attention whore?

I think it's because of comments from Jon Beason

Jon Beason to Alex Smith: Keep quiet about Cam Newton

But then Panthers linebacker Jon Beason took to Twitter with a valid point of his own. Beason told Smith to keep quiet about Newton, and he took a shot at Smith over the fact that the 49ers tried to sign Peyton Manning this year before settling on bringing Smith back.

“Alex smith, don’t hate on Cam Bc your stats would’ve gotten u cut if Peyton decided to come 2 San Fran.Truth b told..That’s after a 13-3 yr,” Beason wrote.

The punter might have more to do with the 49ers going 13-3 than Smith did. He sure made a big difference in our game.

As well, SF had a stellar defense last year, kind of that swarming, suffocating style that we did not display much of last year. I think this is going to be different though.

This was not the right way for Harbaugh to defend his QB, if that is what he was doing. Sometimes it is just best to ignore a story than to completely lie about it.

This just in. Harbaugh is an arrogant lying douche bag. He's such a control freak that he has to control the message even though the cat was long out of the bag. I guess he could probably get away with that shit in college. But he's only making an ass out of himself trying to do that with pro's. This guy will wear on that team within a couple years.
