A.J. Smith: I hope the Broncos don’t run away with the AFC West

Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith will not be making any bold proclamations about his team winning the Super Bowl. Or even the division.

Smith told U-T San Diego that after the Broncos won the AFC West last year and signed Peyton Manning this year, they deserve to be the favorites.

“As far as the division race is concerned, I know this, it will be very difficult to win the West,” Smith said. “The Broncos are defending champs, and they added Peyton Manning. The Raiders and the Chiefs are much better. The Broncos are led by one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history. I just hope the Broncos don’t run away with the division and leave the rest of us behind in the dust.”

Who knows, they might not even have to "steal" it. Could turn out Manning doesn't adjust, or gets some nagging injury complication, and the Broncos wind up 5-11 just like that. Remember how everyone thought the Eagles were going straight to the Super Bowl after they added all those players last year? It's a roll of the dice every time you do something like this.
