A pair of NFL veterans are at the Giants’ rookie minicamp this weekend in hopes of continuing their careers.

Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News reports that wide receiver Limas Sweed and center Jamaal Jackson are both trying to catch on with the Super Bowl champions after seeing their careers derailed in recent years. Sweed was a major disappointment in Pittsburgh, catching just seven passes in 20 games for the team after they made him a second-round pick in 2008. Sweed hasn’t played since 2009 after Achilles and shoulder injuries helped ease his way out of Pittsburgh.

“I’ve been playing football all my life,” Sweed said. “And when you’ve lost something like football, you don’t let it go. You do what you have to do. That’s putting the work in, overtime, being here at a rookie minicamp and just having fun and starting all over again. By whatever means it takes to get back, I’m willing to do it.”

Sweed’s a definite longshot to get a contract, let alone make the roster. The Giants have Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, Rueben Randle, Domenik Hixon, Jerrel Jernigan and Ramses Barden looking for spots on the depth chart and all but Randle already have experience in the offense.

He caught seven passes? That's more than I remember. But damn, that guy could deliver a devastating block.

Maybe Limas should have thought about that BEFORE he dropped everything he could get his slippery hands on during his pathetic career in Pittsburgh.

So who is allowed to participate in rookie minicamp? Because both guys have been in the league awhile.

NFL rules allow players who have not yet earned any credits toward a pension to take part in rookie minicamp.

From the Providence Journal.

Cool, I didn't know that. Thanks Count.

Wonder why Kaboly said that Baron Batch was not allowed to participate in rookie minicamp. I wouldn't think he had any credits if players like Sweed and Jackson do not.

There has to be more to it. Jackson played for 5 years with the Eagles. Perhaps because they have not played in 2 years. I'll keep digging.

I found the reason.

http://blogs.greenbaypressgazette.com/blogs/gpg/insider/2012/05/07/harrell-eligible-for-minicamp-this-weekend/

A team spokesman said in an email that players eligible for this camp are rookies, first-year players who haven’t accrued any pension credits, and tryout players.

The distinction is, a player gains an accrued season if he spends six or more games on a team’s active, inactive and reserve lists. But a player can gain a season of pension credit by being on any of those for only three games.

-----------

Batch gained his pension credits because he spent all last year on injured reserve. But a player like Trevis Turner, who is in his second year with the team and at minicamp, is allowed to be there because he spent all last year on the practice squad not gaining an accured season nor pension credits.

I can't believe Jackson isn't on a roster. Sweed, not so much.

I would say Sweed would be good enough to bring the Gatorade out during timeouts, but then again he might drop and spill it.

Veteran WR Limas Sweed Struggles In Tryout At Giants Rookie Camp

Considering he was a second-round pick and had a big game in the 2006 National Championship game, Limas Sweed was one of the more interesting names on the roster for Giants rookie camp. After the past few days, it'll be a shock if he's on the roster come Monday. The veteran wide receiver struggled to make an impact and this afternoon and dropped three passes, thus reinforcing a knock on him from his days with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sweed came here trying to make an impression. It's extremely unlikely at this point it was a good one.

Butter fingers!!! Hate to see somebody crash and burn, but he self-destructed. Coincidentally, there were so many WR busts in the 2008 draft that it is no longer painful at the waste of a second round pick. Might have been an Arians stretch.

Its unfortunate...while Sweed didnt drop like 20 passes or whatever extreme numbers people say...its just that he dropped some bigger passes that people remember that makes it seem like he dropped a ton. While he all know he has the physical tools to be a good WR...something has just gone wrong inside him or whatever and he's done at this point...along with a LOT of 2008 WRs. I'm not sure if he graduated or still has to finish his degree...but i would recommend thats what he does (finishes school or gets a job in his field). Even though some Steeler fans really dont like you Sweed...we do wish you well in your future endeavors!

It's when you drop the clutch ones that people remember. Then you get a reputation for dropping passes and your goose is cooked.

I guess the Limas World tour bus can stay in the garage. This is the fascinating part of sports. The physical attributes are MINOR in being successful. If your head does not have "it", you are washed up. Such great potential.

yup

case in point, his drop against the chargers before the drop against the ravens. Game was out of hand so no one talks about that one, but against the ravens we would have had a huge halftime lead if it weren't for him

Sweed only CAUGHT 7 passes total. I remember him dropping 3, and the total number was almost certainly higher. But take 3...it's fine because it rounds out nicely. In the NFL, you can't drop 30% of your passes.

By way of comparison, last year. Golden Tate had 35 possible (could be caught) balls thrown his way, and he caught ALL of them. Larry Fitzgerald dropped 3....out of 83! The worst in the league was Arrelious Benn, and he still was 10% better than Sweed (21%). Plus, all drops are not created equal. You can drop a screen behind the LOS and save yardage, which would actually be construed as a positive drop. Sweed dropped sure TD's...and then there's the whole matter of contested versus non-contested. I'm guessing that of Fitz's 3 drops, all 3 of them were with a defender in his face. Sweed dropped balls that were lobbed right into his hands with no one around.

Actually, ever see the episode of Mythbuster's where they loaded a cement truck with some kind of explosive and then blew it up? The truck just vaporized. I mean, it was there one second, there was an explosion, and then it was gone. THAT'S how Limas Sweed's career ended...and it happened years ago.

I just can't help but think that Sweed's tryout went quite similar to the old SNL skit with Peyton throwing a football at the kids in the United Way commercial. I wonder if Eli told him to go sit in the porta-potty? lol
