Ed: Steelers Change Rookie QBs

Written by Ed Bouchette

Rookie orientation begins tomorrow, and I’m sure the Steelers will come up with someone to play quarterback. That someone won’t be Alex Tanney of Monmouth College. He’s now going to work out for the Buffalo Bills at their orientation.

Tanney reneged on an apparent agreement to work out with the Steelers during their orientation. However, he changed his mind, called the Steelers and said they were okay with it. It’s really no big deal. The Steelers quickly turned to another quarterback, Oregon’s Darron Thomas, for a tryout this weekend. Maybe he’s the next Dennis Dixon, another QB from Oregon whose Steelers career never took off despite his early promise. No one has signed Dixon yet, by the way.

Chuck Finder of CBS Sports reported Friday morning (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/post/18961863) undrafted free agent QB Alex Tanney has left the Steelers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/pittsburgh-steelers), opting to go through rookie minicamp with (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/rapid-reports/post/18961863)the Buffalo Bills (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/buffalo-bills) instead.
Finder wrote Tanney, a Monmouth product, went to Buffalo due to the fact the Steelers brought in Oregon QB Darron Thomas, and apparently, didn’t want to compete against him.

Thomas is in the athletic mold the Steelers seem to like in their project back-up quarterbacks. Another Oregon product, Dennis Dixon (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/34443/dennis-dixon), served as the Steelers back-up until he became a free agent in 2012............

So he took off when he found out there was competition? LOL! He'll never make it in the NFL with that attitude.

he has a chance to end up as a starter in Buffalo. That's obviously not happening here.

:doh2: The Steelers grab another worthless option QB. When will they ever learn?

Why would they do that? Thomas is a piece of donkey shit with no accuracy and god help us if he ever saw the field. In the NFL, your entire offense cannot be "OMG WHO HAS TEH BALL" and then you try to outrun everybody. Dixon at least looked in college like he had some remote chance of becoming a legitimate QB. This guy has no hope.

Our ability to scout Quarterbacks has been questionable recently. Another Option reject from that gimmick college offense in Oregon? Have we learned nothing from the Dixon experiment? In fact, why is Dennis Dixon still on the roster?

This is why we've had to hold onto Charlie for so long. He's the only viable backup on the Roster. Byron can't stay healthy, and Dixon must see as little playtime as possible because he sucks.

Dixon is not on the roster.

While i value every one of the 90 roster spots, I'm not going to get too up in arms. Be it Tanney, Thomas, or someone else, they're not going to make the team. Thomas is what, 6th on the depth chart?

Agreed. None of these guys was going to make the roster.

Right now, if we keep three quarterbacks, the three that I see being kept would be.

1. Ben Roethlisberger
2a. Charlie Batch
2b. Troy Smith

I think Batch and Smith would battle it out for the #2 spot.
