Everyone misses on draft picks, even in the first round, even high in the first round. For every Peyton Manning, there is a Ryan Leaf. For every Ben Roethlisberger there is a Matt Leinart. For every Clay Matthews there is a Tony Mandarich.
The list of NFL first-round busts is a long one and every team has its notorious picks, even the Steelers -- but not since Kevin Colbert arrived. Chances are, when the Steelers take their first pick Thursday night, he'll become a star, just as most of their first-rounders in this century.
The Steelers have had first-round draft busts in every decade but one, even in their mostly phenomenal drafts from the 1970s. In this century, though, they have not swung and missed. People can debate whether they might have done better in a particular first round since 2000, or whether a player truly has fulfilled expectations. None, however, has come close to being a bust such as those from the '70s (running back Greg Hawthorne), '80s (too many to mention) and '90s (linebacker Huey Richardson, lineman Jamain Stephens).
The Steelers have missed badly a few times in the second and third rounds in recent years, but not in the first.
