Cotchery stays with the Steelers

Veteran receiver Jerricho Cotchery, who slid into Hines Ward’s role in Pittsburgh last year, could be filling those duties again. Especially since Ward is gone, and now Cotchery is back.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that Cotchery has agreed to terms on a two-year deal.

The former Jet drew interest from the Chiefs and Rams before returning to Pittsburgh.

With the Steelers using cap room to sign Cotchery and tight end Leonard Pope in the past two days, the Steelers could be feeling confident that they won’t need extra 2012 cap space to match an offer sheet signed by receiver Mike Wallace with a new team, since appears fairly clear at this point that Wallace won’t be signing one. The window for restricted free agency closes on April 20.

I'm glad to see this. He made some good catches last year and was dependable when we needed him.

Just too much emphasis on the offense this off season. Need to take care of the D. :chuckle:

At least we won't have to worry about Plaxico now.

Good job Steelers! I figured this was going to happen all along. Cotch made no secret of his desire to stay in Pittsburgh, and it was pretty obvious that Ben wanted him back.

Good keep! Now get Wallace done and handle Brown next season!

So likely a group of Brown, Cotchery, Wallace and Sanders going forward. Not too bad. Maybe looking at a 5th round pick or later to fill out the roster and play special teams.

I hope we can sign Brown and Wallace but I think its going to be tough to sign both to long term contracts. Espeacially if Brown has the season he had last yr, wallace is already unhappy right now

I would take Brown over Wallace simply by being more clutch. Wallace reminds me of Barry Bonds.

I know not everyone thinks as highly of Cotchery as I do, but I consider this a key FA re-signing....very, very important to have this guy back. I expect a big season from him.

NFL.Com said Cotchery signed for 3 Mill... More then they offered Wallace... Steelers sending Wallace a message, earn your dough?

Cotchery's $3M is over 2 years. Also, I think the RFA qualifying offers are predetermined, based on the level of compensation the offering team would get in return if a RFA signed with another team. I don't think the $2.742M is just a made up number. Also, if he signs, there is nothing stopping the two parties from working out a long term deal. That is one of the reasons wallace's decision is short-sighted. If he wants a fair payday, he should sign his tender and start the long term negotiations. It is invetiable that he will sign, otherwise he can't play and thus can't become an unrestricted FA. It may be his right not to particiapte in OTAs, but it is a dumb thing to do.

Absolutely. We need him badly, specially if Sanders can't be healthy and Wallace goes. Anyway I would like to see the Steelers draft a WR in later rounds.
