The Steelers have been awarded three compensatory picks – all in the seventh round -- in next month`s draft.

The picks, compensation for free agent losses the previous year, give the Steelers four selections in the final round of the draft and 10 overall. Past seventh-round picks by the Steelers include running back Baron Batch (2011), tight end David Johnson (2009) and defensive end Brett Keisel (2002).

Compensatory picks were awarded at today's NFL owners meetings based on a formula of free agent gains and losses. The Steelers lost tight end Matt Spaeth and defensive end Nick Eason last year. They signed tight end John Gilmore but he did not make the team.

Isn't that a waste of time? Don't they come at the end of the round? So virtually we are drafting UDFAs?

Really? What's the big deal? :noidea:

It actually gives us a competitive advantage over the other teams who will also be fishing for UDFA's. We get 3 more shots at them. It's not a huge deal, but it doesn't hurt.

John Gilmore is a veteran tight end. I believe he spent most of his career with Tampa. He played with New Orleans last season after not making the Steelers.

Upon hearing the news I painted a "W" on each butt cheek and then bent over.

Jeremy Kapinos isn't the worst punter out there. I think he's doing just fine.

The one think it does for us, is that that will be 3 players we will not have to contact right away before someone else grabs them.

heh, mostly it sucks for the players we draft with those picks. As UDFAs, they at least could've picked a team where they'd have a better shot at making the roster. Now they have to go fishing for jobs again after everybody's already made their training camp decisions.

We could easily get a very good a good punter and kicker with those picks. Not like we can improve in those areas or anything.

I think this backup problem needs to be addressed sooner rather than later, we are VERY THIN at the position.

How many extra picks did Goofdell give to the Patriots*?

What if we trade up our #246 & #248 picks for Cleveland's #245? That would be a blockbuster deal announced over every channel. ESPN might even break into baseball highlights for that news.

Not a good draft for kickers. It is a good draft for punters. But, Kapinos is growing on me a little. Would not mind a FB with one of those picks. Good time to find a WR (deep WR draft).

Can't trade comp picks.
