Steelers announce a press conference for Hines Ward for later today. Should be an emotional end to an outstanding career

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced a press conference today with their all-time leading receiver, Hines Ward. Presumably, the announcement will be that Ward is retiring from the NFL.

Although there’s no official word on the 36-year-old Ward’s retirement, it’s hard to think of any other reason that Ward would be making any type of announcement.

I'm not in love with him, but I'm sure I'll cry, too. He's one of my favorite Steelers of all time. Thank god he won't be going to another team :tt02: and thank god for Sirius NFL radio. I can listen to the whole thing during lunch :)

I hope that it is a retirement announcement.... If so, I will cry - - I am tearing up just thinking about it.... But, it is better than seeing him wearing other colors this coming season.... I have a feeling that he made some good connections and got wise visibility during DWTS, and that he will be in the public eye with a microphone in his hand..... Let's hope so....

I bet they will. I think that Hines will be there working very soon. Maybe he can tell Warren Sapp to piss off for me.

I'm guessing the 31 other teams in the league weren't too keen on letting him come to the organization and not practice for an entire off season the way the Steelers and Tomlin let him "slide" over the last couple years.

This is actually great news, I hoped to never see him in another uniform.

tube517

He is announcing a world tour with Dancing With The Stars. Dan Rooney will be his "Col. Parker"

GutterflowerSteel
03-20-2012, 11:09 AM
Aww ... he's very emotional, as I'm listening to this. Now he's taking questions ...
He's saying that there's been some interest from other teams, but he couldn't see himself in another uniform, because the passion and the feeling would never be the same, and it's not worth playing another season or two with a different team. He said that he's a STeeler for life and this is bittersweet - but this is the right thing to do.

The NFL just lost a GREAT WR. He played the game the way it was meant to be played and, even as a Browns fan, I shall miss seeing his smile on gameday. If ever there was a WR for young prospects to look up to (since Jerry Rice left the game), this was that guy. Now, hopefully they Hall of Farce voters get it right sooner rather than later with him (unlike how they did Dermonti Dawson and Chris Carter).

"I spent time reading thousands of e-mails, Facebook posts, tweets, letters, cards and well wishes from fans everywhere," Ward said. "As I read them, I was really moved by the tremendous outpouring of love, encouragement and support from everybody everywhere. It really got to me. Through it all, I realized that there's only one thing I lover more than the game, and that's Steeler Nation.

"Without your support over the last 14 years, this game wouldn't be the same to me. Wouldn't be as fun for me. You guys meant the world to me."

It surely is sad to see him retire, but I'd rather see him retire then play on another team. He is the greatest wide receiver in Steelers history and will always be a Steeler great. He is HOF bound!

Hines Ward was the definition of Pittsburgh Steeler. He was a great receiver, the greatest receiver to ever don the Black & Gold. A consummate professional that poured his heart into playing the game for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In future years, we will be talking about how much of a badass Hines Ward is, much like we do for the 70s Steelers. This guy was a rock, much like Aaron Smith. It was cool to see Aaron, Deebo, Kiesel and I couldn't see who else was there at the PC

Good on you Hines. Thanks for the many years and great games.

Glad he is right on 1,000 receptions. Just like Clemente on 3,000. Anytime anyone gets close to those numbers, Ward will be mentioned.
