He remains only one year to his contract
A team can restructure a contract when there remains a one year contract?!

There was no way the Steelers could pay Hampton $4.89 million and have him count $8.1 million against the cap this season. He'll be 35 in September and is coming off ACL surgery. Hampton has agreed to reduce his base salary to $2.8 million and eliminate his workout bonus, reducing his cap hit by $3.09 million.

That is excellent, excellent news! The Steelers need him, he knows that, and he still agreed to this. I am very pleased with his attitude.
Can a capologist please update our situation now? I think we should have a few million for FA, correct?

After the restricted free agent tenders, I believe we were approximately 1.5 million under. Hampton's new contract should put us under between 4-5 million.

Am I reading this correctly, Hampton took a $5 million pay cut. Good for him, putting the team first. All of a sudden we some cap to work with.

Eric Steinbach just became available. I don't usually advocate picking up ex-Browns, but he's a decent LG and played very well with joe Thomas. maybe we could use this extra cash to sign him...

Wow. There's something you don't see often... A pay cut. Although, did Hampton ever qualify for a workout bonus? :chuckle:
Nice to see.

If he's right, around 8 million isn't that bad for where we sit now. Of course, we have to sign draft picks and Wallace long term (I hope), as well as pick up a couple FAs. But it's a lot better than it looked a month ago.
Now we do not necessarily need to draft a NT in the first round.

Very good!
I think this will afford us the go-ahead for an o-lineman in the 1st rd. I think a big big body like snack's (who we will need to replace eventually) can be had in the 3rd or 4th rd. Casey can still hold off a double team and not lose gound IF his knee holds up.

With his injury was he going to make any workout bonuses anyhow?
