View Full Version : Peyton Manning narrows it down to ARI and DEN

The Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardinals, the first two teams Manning visited with, are considered the two likeliest landing spots at this point, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The Seattle Seahawks continue to try to arrange a meeting with Manning, according to sources, but so far it has been unable to do.
Manning still could wind up meeting with the Miami Dolphins, but indications are that the Miami isn't as high on this list at this time as Denver and Arizona. There always is the possibility another team suddenly jumps into the fray, but it is looking increasingly likely that there are only a few viable possibilities at this time.
One source who spoke with Manning prior to his visit with the Cardinals said "his gut is that Manning is leaning toward Denver."

I've always thought Arizona was the best fit.
But Denver is interesting. They have a running game, good receivers, decent defense and a Head Coach, GM and owner that Manning should be able to buddy up with. And it's Denver's way out of the Tebow fiasco. Seems like a win all the way around.
I still like him in Arizona. But I don't know if he and the Head Coach there get along as well as he and John Fox would.

I hate to play the "unnamed source, I'm hearing" card where it seems like I'm trying to sound like some kind of big-shot, but I think this is extremely relevant to the conversation if at all accurate.
I'm being told from Baltimore (from a work connection, someone who would have many opportunities to overhear things regarding the Ravens) that the Ravens are making a real play for Peyton.
Keep in mind I realize that the above statement makes me sound like a total tool.

It would certainly be scary.
I don't see it happening though. Even if they are interested in him, I don't think Peyton fits in well with the persona of that team. And is the Ravens roster really much better than the Broncos? I don't think the difference is that large. Plus, it would mean he'd have to go through the AFC North.

The reason I dont think he goes to miami is because he wants a superbowl and in that division he would have to compete with brady. Denver and Arizona have very winnable divisions so I think it is narrowed down to those 2 options.

I don't think I agree with this. Manning has the arm strength and accuracy to perform well in the cold. Sure, being in a dome has helped him over the years - as it would help any quarterback. But I would be more concerned about the elements bothering his neck than his arm.

My point exactly! Denver would have to be head and shoulders above the others for me to even consider it, if I were him. And I don't see where they are? I think their talent is mediocre across the board. I'd take both the Dolphins and Cardinals defense over theirs.

When I said I would be more worried about his neck than arm, I didn't necessarily mean I'm very worried about the neck haha. There is definitely a point there, I'm just not personally worried about the weather/location of my home games if I'm looking at Manning.
As far as the teams go, I think they are all pretty similar. They all have decent young defenses and solid receivers.
Where Denver and Miami set themselves apart are at the offensive line. Both of those offensive lines are much better than Arizona's.
But the Cardinals have Fitzgerald, who I think is much better than Brandon Marshall and probably better than the tandem of Thomas/Decker.
So to me, it comes down to Fitzgerald vs. a better offensive line as far as the roster goes. If that's the case, I think it's advantage Fitzgerald due to how fast manning usually gets the ball out.
As far as coaching staff/management I'd have to rank them 1. Denver, 2. Miami and 3. Arizona. I think he'd get along great with the staff in Denver. He should do well with the coaches in Miami, but I don't think he likes the type of owner Stephen Ross is. And I see he and Whisenhunt clashing a ton if he goes to Arizona.
It's a good debate. All teams seem to have good arguments.

The only problem with Denver is the cold weather. Although, there are two warm weather teams in the division. I still think Miami is a good spot. Yes, you have to compete against the Pats, but the Jets have managed to make the playoffs doing that with Sanchez at QB. Plus, the Dolphins have a good defense, offensive line and I think Reggie Bush would be a weapon for Peyton.

I think it would be stupid to hand over a few million dollars to a guy who just missed an entire season of professional football due to a nerve injury that make my arm 80% weaker and had to have neck surgery to fix the problem without seeing him throw the ball. I would want to see him in a pro-day style workout before even writing up any type of contract.
I would think that if he had to pick between the Cardinals and the Broncos, he'd want to go play in the warm weather/dome of Arizona eight games a season, plus a game in a dome in St. Louis and normally warm weather in San Francisco to guarantee 10 games a season in a dome or decent weather.
In Denver you're going to have good weather at the begging of the season but then you'll be dealing with cold and snow later. I haven't wanted a lot of Colts games in my lifetime but from what I have heard, he hasn't fared the best in bad weather. So playing probably 4-6 home games in bad weather at home....but then you get a game in Oakland which is normally good weather, a game in San Diego which is normally good weather, and a game in Kansas City where it does get cold later in the year.
Then I think Miami is still in the running. You get 8 games in at least warmish weather at home (though you could always end up playing in rain or a hurricane). Then games in Buffalo, New England, and New York...but some of those will be before the weather gets bad...but some will be in weather and they have had some really bad weather games in those cities.

I agree with that. ESPN LOVES Brady and they love Manning...they don't want them in the same division possibly keeping the other one out of the playoffs. Not to mention that only one could win the division, which means the other would be a wild card and then you likely wouldn't have Manning vs Brady in the AFC Championship Game.

Peyton Manning, nearing decision, is impressed with Broncos, sources say
There was a dog-and-pony show aspect to the Arizona Cardinals recruitment of prized free agent Peyton Manning on Sunday. His visit to the Broncos on Friday and Saturday was more understated.
Manning left Arizona on Sunday evening for Miami, where he lives, and it is believed he is looking to make a decision by Tuesday.
The Denver Post talked to multiple NFL sources Sunday, and here's what is known:
• Neither Denver or Arizona officials discussed contract during Manning's visit, on Peyton's orders. Manning let the Broncos and Cardinals know that he didn't want to talk money without his agent Tom Condon along.

According to the Denver Post, free agent Peyton Manning did not discuss contract terms during his weekend visits with the Cardinals and Broncos.
Manning kept it "strictly football" during both visits, and didn't even bring agent Tom Condon out west. The Post reports that Manning was "impressed" by the Broncos, and the Arizona Republic reported Sunday that Peyton was "really into" his Cardinals visit. The Post, as ESPN's Adam Schefter has recently, insists Manning "is not basing his decision on money." Per Post reporter Mike Klis, the Seahawks and Chiefs "are out" of the mix after Manning declined both teams' overtures. He is expected to sign with a new team by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Appearing on SportsCenter Monday morning, ESPN's Adam Schefter said repeatedly that free agent Peyton Manning will not be taking any more visits. It sounds like he was two-and-done. Manning visited Denver and Arizona over the weekend, and they are the frontrunners to sign him. "The Broncos look like the favorites," Schefter said. "The Cardinals are in contention. There might be one more team, like the Dolphins, he'll wind up talking to." In other words, don't look for Manning to visit Miami's facility. That doesn't remove the Dolphins from contention, but they're certainly behind the other teams. Ultimately, we don't blame Manning at all for passing on one of the league's most dysfunctional and shortsighted front offices.

If I'm Manning, here's my take on Denver:
A) It's cold there...and can be REALLY snowy. He said he didn't want to play in the cold.
B) Tebow is going to be a problem. Manning has never been a mentor. Sorgi said it was very clear that (at least in Indy), the back-ups job was to basically be Peyton's bitch. Breakdown film for him. Discuss the other teams defense. Stay out of the way. Tebow thinks he's a star NFL QB. His game is about as different from Manning's as you can get. I see problems with this relationship.
C) Denver is a running football team. That could be either boon or bane. Airing it out might not work for them.
I'd pick Arizona if I were him.

Just read that here http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/report-broncos-sign-manning-tebow-could-gone-171902080.html . However, the Bronco's have been a running team forever, not just because Tebow can't read a defense or throw accurately.
Interesting situation there. Who would want a QB who costs a lot of money and can't really play the position at this level? I have to think he's going to be a player a team like the Patriots would be interested in. They have a knack for taking former running QB's and making them into real players at other positions. To tell you the truth, even though I dislike him personally, he'd be a helluva weapon for the Steelers as a true H-back. We could use him as a fullback to block, as a TE to catch and block, and utilize his running ability as well at RB. Not to mention what he brings to the table from a gadget-play standpoint. Not that we have the cash, but...

Actually, it really doesn't get all that cold here. And on the odd occasions that it does, it doesn't last long. We seem to get one major dumping of snow every 3 years or so. Winters on the whole tend to be very mild (it's the mountains surrounding Denver that get the serious cold and snow). That being said, I could see playing in the elements being a problem for him all the same as there's no dome here.

The 35-year-old is expected to announce his decision this week on which team he will continue his career with. According to ProFootballTalk, it is believed that Manning has narrowed his choices to the Denver Broncos and the Arizona Cardinals. Both teams currently have established quarterbacks in Tim Tebow and Kevin Kolb, however both teams have expressed interest in changing directions should Manning come their way.
Some believe the Miami Dolphins have an outside shot at the four-time Most Valuable Player; however he has not made a visit to the team’s facilities.

Titans preparing for visit from free-agent QB Peyton Manning
The Tennessee Titans are entering the Peyton Manning sweepstakes and are expecting as well as preparing for a visit from Manning in the next day or two, league sources said Monday.
The Titans entered the Manning picture Sunday when owner Bud Adams told the Tennessean that he is ready to do whatever it takes to sign the four-time MVP, who recently was released by the Indianapolis Colts.
"He is the man I want. Period," Adams said. "And the people that work for me understand that. They know who I want. I want Mr. Manning with the Titans and I will be disappointed if it doesn't happen."

Munchak, a Hall of Fame guard, was a teammate of Manning's father, Archie, during the 1982 and 1983 seasons with the Houston Oilers.
"I want Manning," Titans owner Bud Adams told The Tennessean Sunday. "I'd love to see him in Titan blue after watching him so many years with the Colts. ... I want him. I am ready to do what it takes to get him aboard, and I think he'd be the guy to get us into the playoffs."

Titans Meet With Free Agent QB Peyton Manning For Seven Hours
Peyton Manning, after spending the better part of 7 hours inside of Baptist Sports Park, has left the building. John Glennon reported that the team has said there will be no statement tonight, but apparently Peyton is heading back to North Carolina. The biggest news to come out of all of this is that Burton Elrod, the Titans team doctor, spent more than an hour inside the facility. That would mean that Peyton got some type of physical from the team tonight. It has not seen it reported that he met with the doctors of any of the other teams he visited.
