5-year extension for Sanchez.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez's new contract is a 3-year extension for $40.5 million, giving him five total years for $58.25 million, with $20.5 million fully guaranteed.

Why would you do this. The only way I could buy it is if the new contract made it easier for the team to cut him without penalty, I don't think that's the case here.

I think they did it the same reason a guy who cheats on his wife buys her jewelry. :heh:

In other words Sanchez knows they made overtures to Peyton Manning, but Manning had zero interest in the Jets. Moving on the only chance for peace in the family is a good bribe.

He is no Eli, but he is also not the worst QB in the league. I think Sanchez would perform better in a system not dominated by a big mouthed, fatso HC.

NOW Ryan can boast about being the next Super Bowl winner. His franchez QB is all sealed up. Good job Jets.

Dumb move paying big money to a regressing player

The jets would have been better off investing in a cheese burger for Rex Ryan. Mark Sanchez new deal???...wtf!!

Good, shut the door on the Jets.

I hope the Ravens do likewise for Flacco.

I agree about the motives behind the move, but if Sanchez is pissed - who cares? It's clear the Jets don't truly believe he is the guy who's going to lead them to championship. His play doesn't deserve a new deal. I don't agree that living in fear of the player is every a reason to give him more money. They were looking into an opportunity to improve the team, if Sanchez doesn't like it too bad.

Sanchez was best when the Jets were a ground and pound team. Last season, they lost their ability to run the ball effectively, and that hurt the offense a lot.

And Sanchez hasn't regressed like people are thinking, here are his stat lines for the past three seasons.

2009: QB RAT 63.0, 53.8% completions, 2444 yards, 12 TD, 20 INT
2010: QB RAT 75.3, 54.8% completions, 3291 yards, 17 TD, 13 INT
2011: QB RAT 78.2, 56.7% completions, 3474 yards, 26 TD, 18 INT

The two biggest problems with Sanchez are his completion percentage and the amount of interceptions thrown. And neither of which are always 100% the fault of the quarterback. Dropped passes can kill completion percentage and receivers that give up on plays can easily cause interceptions.

I am in now way saying that Sanchez was worthy of this extensions, especially at the price he's being paid now that he has received it. Just pointing out that he hasn't regressed but instead it was the Jets that regressed as a whole last season. To go along with the running game being bad, the defense wasn't as good as people were expecting either. Yes they were top 10 against the pass and against the rush. But in scoring defense they were 20th giving up an average of 22.7 points per game and a total of 363 points on the entire season. When your offense isn't doing what you want it to do and your defense is giving up that many points, it's the entire team that has regressed.

However when a team wins the QB gets too much praise, and when a team loses the QB gets too much blame.
