I doubt the talking heads on Sirius will even try to create a controversy this time. At most they can say the Steelers will have lots of new players.

It's a hard decision to release a player, but it's the right decision with Aaron.

They are doing this the right way. They are doing it early, so the guys have lots of time to try to find other teams if they still want to play. In Ward's case, there was an honest face-to-face, and ostensibly no hard feelings. I'm sure Smith and Farrior (if these rumors are true) will be handled the same way.

These guys have agents and play hardball when negotiating their deals. This is just the reciprocation by the team on the back-end.

The real news is what we already all kind of figured: We need DL and ILB in the draft.

and if someone makes a deal for Wallace and ends up giving us a 1st round pick for him...we get a DL and ILB in the first round...then go OL in the 2nd...long term...that might be the plan

These are tough decisions emotionally, but the right ones for the team.

And we need DL, too...

The bill came due this year in more ways than one...

Another move that was expected but its still hard to see these guys actually being cut. Thank you for everything, Aaron.

Honestly, at this point our personnel are almost more suited to a 4-3 than a 3-4. Not that I see that happening.

Yep it was time for this last year.

Thanks Aaron!

Bill Cowher on Sirius NFL Radio right now, discussing this with T-Rock and PK. He just said that Aaron is one of his favorite players ever - he called Farrior the emotional leader of the team - and said that Hines epitomized everything that a Steeler should be.

15 games in 3 seasons, ya it was sadly time to release him. Injuries were plaguing him and let's be honest the defense needs to get younger.

Agreed. Another sad day for Steeler fans but we all knew it was coming.

I hope all these younger guys have learned something about the Steeler way from Ward and Smith. They will be missed but time to move on.

Some tough cuts are taking place. Probably had to happen, I'm still sad though.

It his prime, hell even when he was just healthy, it was amazing how different the team looked with him playing. Almost like pulling Troy out of the lineup.

In Tomlin's "rookie" season (2007) the Steelers were tracking along as if they were going to be major players in the post season going along at 9-3. Then Aaron got hurt, the run defense absolutely collapses, and the the Steelers lose 4 out of the next 5 including the home playoff loss to the Jags.

For those that suggest Aaron was injury prone. He didn't miss a start due to injury from when first became a starter in week 2 in the 2000 season, until week 12 of the 2007 season. That's nearly 8 full seasons in the "pits" without missing any time.
