The best part about this is that it makes Adam Schefter look very stupid over at BSPN.com....oh and that Butler will be staying.

Great news. That may mean that this is Lebeau's swan song. Sure hope he goes out as SB winner.

My thoughts as well could we be seeing the last year for Lebeau?

Addition by subtraction on the offense AND we maintain stability on defense. Looks like a good off-season already.

Steelers' LBs coach Butler to stick with staff

Linebackers coach Keith Butler has decided against interviewing for the defensive coordinator position with the Indianapolis Colts and will remain with the Steelers, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has learned.
Butler was scheduled to interview with new Colts Coach Chuck Pagano on Tuesday in Indianapolis, but he changed his mind after meeting today with team president Art Rooney II and Coach Mike Tomlin.
Butler was told after the 2009 season he will be the team's defensive coordinator when Dick LeBeau retires -- a handshake agreement that was made when he turned down the Miami Dolphins offer to become their defensive coordinator.
It is not known what was said at today's meeting, but Butler was likely given a stronger indication -- not to mention a hefty new contract -- about when he might replace LeBeau, who is 74.

Schefter has been unreliable since he went to BSPN.

Sometimes the story changes. These things are fluid, I don't doubt for a minute that Butler was all but gone, when Rooney, Tomlin, and maybe even LeBeau made their final pitch to keep him. As has already been said I'm sure that there's a clear understanding that 2012 will be LeBeau's last season and Butler will succeed him in 13.

The fact Butler has turned down three DC jobs just shows his happines with the organization and coaching under guys like LeBeau and Tomlin.

I know I gave Art a hard time but that never changed my opinion that we have the best organization in the NFL.

Isn't that why you gave Art a hard time? It definitely was not his most classy move. But I don't want to dampen this good news. Onward and upward. We still have some work to do.

I'd wager to say he's the highest paid LB coach in the league

Glad he's staying. But I wouldn't have blamed him for leaving either

If this is true thats great! Not that I'm saying this will happen...but if Butler does re-sign with the Steelers DL doesnt have a contract right for the new year like BA...hmmmm...maybe they said he can be DC now...doubtful but still.

Yes, I gave him a hard time because that decision didn't reflect the great organization we have. But it didn't change my overall thoughts of the Rooney's. That would have been a knee-jerk reaction.

If its true, Tomlin probably wanted Butler to have a chance to realize his aspiration of being a D Coordinator. But, as per ususal, I bet we find out that Darth Rooney probably pulled the rug out from under Tomlin again and stepped in.

That dastardly villain. :mad2: Next I bet we see Art II tying Hines Ward to a railway track unless he retires.

This.

I hate journalists who try and "scoop" everyone else by posting speculation as fact. Schefter had ESPN stations across the country reporting this as a done deal.....Props to Sue for her ability to see through the BS!!!!

I'm glad he staying because he has trained under Lebeau and seems to be able to train LBers, but I must ask why is everyone so convinced he is the next great DC in the burgh? I guess what I'm saying is I feel ignorant to his resume and skills.

And blamed it on Tomlin.

All "regime" means is the powers that be. The operative word was "Nouveau", meaning new...

Also, I think he realized where he would be going to if offered and accepted the job. Who will be there on the defensive side of the ball for them to even work with?

I am guessing that Pagano wants to go with a 3-4 defense. Robert Mathis is going into free agency and likely won't be resigned. Dwight Freeney doesn't fit in a 3-4 defense, so he'll likely be cut.

It's going to be a project, and it doesn't help that the secondary is pretty damn bad for the most part. Yeah, he's shown to be a very good LB coach, but coaching a player up only goes so far, the player has to have the talent and drive to be the best he can possibly be. I would say Pat Angerer has the talent to be a good ILB.

In Pittsburgh, Butler gets a handsome paycheck to coach the LB's. He has the chance to go to the playoffs most years. He's coached on three Super Bowl teams, winning two. He's got a handshake agreement to replace Dick LeBeau as the DC here when he retires. That's a much better gig than rebuilding an entire defense in Indy with few parts to work with. Then, if after a few years results aren't what the owner expects them to be, Pagano gets fired and Butler is likely gone too.
