The Steelers have 25 million over the cap and they must released the players.

What will be the players they will be cut?

Hampton, Smith, Foote (or) Farrior (Shouldn't keep both)

Yeah, I knew I was forgetting a few. Kemo should be gone without question. Ward is still somewhat questionable. I could see him sticking around now that Arians is gone.

Hines is an expensive #4 WR. They would need to release him and have him re-sign for vet minimum IMO. Kemo is still sadly the best OG on the roster when healthy, but isnt playing up to his pay grade. Jon Scott, Foster, Legursky, Chris Scott and a rookie 2nd round pick. Should be 2 serviceable guards out of that group.

Agree

and realeasing both would leave us with a huge hole inside linebacker. I'd keep Farrior, even with his age. His cap number isn't as high as other players anyway

only ones I can certainly say won't be here again are BMac and Kemoeatu

Smith, Farrior, Ward, Kemo, Colon, Suisham, Battle, Johnson, McFadden. That's a little over $20M.

I don't get where all these wild claims about us being $25M or $29M over the salary cap are coming from. From what I can gather, it's more like $4M. http://www.steelersdepot.com/2011/09/steelers-2012-salary-cap-total-players-under-contract/

So most of the players getting cut, you could expect to be for football-related reasons.

Regardless, boy, do all those huge bonuses for Woodley and Timmons look stupid.

Really? Why?

The Steelers wont lose anyone they can't get by without. Every one they end up releasing is a season or two away from retirement anyway. Woodley and Timmons are cornerstones of the defense for the next 5 years. Signing them long term was essential to the immediate and future well being of the defense. And there was no way to keep them in the seasons ahead without giving them exactly what they did in the way of signing bonus and contract's.

Am thinking they could have done so without having Woodley count $11.5M against the cap and Timmons $9M. Looking at their base salary vs. cap hit, it looks like we structured their contracts pretty poorly. Not saying we shouldn't have kept them, but that's just bad practice regardless of who else is in or out.

Linebacker is not really a position you can afford to have a $10M cap hit at multiple positions. Maybe you can do it if it's, like ... one guy, who's the best in the league.

Good link. I never worry about Omar. He's a cap whiz, he'll always find a way to gain space when needed.

Definitely should be Kemo, he is a liability. I could see Aaron Smith getting cut since he can no longer stay on the field for a significant amount of time. I could see Ward, Hampton, and Farrior going. Hampton and Farrior are on the decline and the former has suffered an ACL injury. Ward's role has been reduced from no. 1 wideout to no. 3 or 4.

Ward is #5 if Cotchery comes back.

Extra 3rd round pick for Keenan Lewis sounds nice.

Unfortunately, we'll be saying goodbye to a few veterans who have done so much for this team. It certainly is upsetting.

What CB do you draft to replace Keenan Lewis?

Lewis is ready to start in place of William Gay if he is not back.

No drafted CB starts regardless of where they are drafted with the complexity of LeBeau's system

Most of the names mentioned will be gone. None of them will be very big losses that will set us back though. I thought Hampton had a chance at returning, but now with his surgery, he will more then likely be gone. At this point, he was at most, a two down player. Although a very effective one. We may keep Farrior bc there is no one behind him. It will be sad to see Ward leave, but he has to go. The money just won't make sense.

Not a horrible situation. Most will be veterans who have done their service for the Steelers and contributed more than most ever will. We will have the players in place drooling for a position and who have what it takes to take over.

Well, in that case, I stand corrected. They structured those contracts pretty well; I guess I just wasn't aware you could do it the way they did.

IDK, I think we should rework Ward and allow him to retire rather than cutting him. He's already said he'll play for less.
