Caldwell served as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, Southern Illinois University, Northwestern, Colorado, Louisville, and Penn State before being named head coach at Wake Forest in 1993. He was the first African-American coach in the ACC.
In eight years, Caldwell had a record of 26–63. He installed a powerful passing attack that set numerous school records (many of which have since been broken under his successor, Jim Grobe). However, his teams rarely ran well; in one year the Demon Deacons' leading rusher only notched 300 yards for the entire season. He only had one winning season, in 1999 when the Deacons won the Aloha Bowl.
[edit]Indianapolis Colts
Caldwell joined Tony Dungy's staff with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2001 as quarterbacks coach. He followed Dungy to Indianapolis in 2002 and remained with him for his entire tenure, helping lead the Colts to a win in Super Bowl XLI.
On January 13, 2008, Caldwell was formally announced as Dungy's successor-in-waiting. On January 12, 2009, Dungy announced his retirement, putting Caldwell in the head coaching position.[1] He was formally introduced at a press conference the following day.[

Rooney wont let him if he tries! Seriously, why the hell would anyone even think of hiring him? I refuse to believe there's any truth to this!

no, he has never been an OC. let's hope his OC career doesn't start here. he's another one of tomlin's buddy pals. they both worked for the buccaneers in 2001.

Omar went to the bathroom and Will.I.Am took his place. Same difference. Caldwell was emotionless. Lowe was scoping out the 2012 Democratic convention.

While all signs were pointing to quarterback coach Randy Fichtner as a sure-bet to replace Bruce Arians as offensive coordinator, the Steelers might not be ready to pull the trigger quite yet.

I received a tip that Mike Tomlin met with former Indianapolis head coach Jim Caldwell on Saturday morning at swanky Terrace restaurant inside the Omni William Penn Hotel.

Tomlin was dressed in jeans and a Steelers long-sleeved shirt with a Steelers hat on while Caldwell was wearing a black shirt and a black leather jacket while the two met in a secluded area of the restaurant.

The Omni William Penn is where the team stays the nights before home games.

So what does this mean?

Well, it means something and nothing at the same time.

Just because Caldwell had a meeting with Tomlin doesn’t make him the favorite for the job. But still, where there is smoke, there is fire.

Tomlin and Caldwell have a history together, and that can’t be ignored.

The two were first-year assistants under Tony Dungy in 2001 while at Tampa Bay. Caldwell went to Indy the next year with Dungy while Tomlin stayed with the Buccaneers.

Look at Tomlin’s coaching staff – he feels very comfortable hiring people he has coached with in the past.

When he was hired by the Steelers in 2007, Tomlin brought on Randy Fichtner, Amos Jones, Larry Zierlein, Kirby Wilson and Garrett Giemont – all of whom he worked with before.

It is not a coincidence that the two known candidates for the job once worked with Tomlin – Caldwell and Fichtner.

one could say tomlin hires coaches based on friendship(or at least that friendship adds a lot of weight to his decision).

is/was anyone really happy with these/those coaching additions?

Do you honestly believe that just because an in-house OC worked under Arians that he would coach just like Arians? If you do, you're simply being naive. Neither Whiz nor Mularkey coached exactly the same way, and they worked together for several seasons.

pretty sure they already acknowledged that when they drafted a QB (Flacco) in the first round, and then brought in via free agency:
Lee Evans
Anquan Boldin
TJ Houshamama
Donte' Stallworth

And then drafted WRs in the 2nd and 4th round last year,

One thing to remember about the meeting between Tomlin and Caldwell is that Tomlin just lost his father. They might have just been talking as friends.

I hope becoming more "pass-oriented" means scrapping up their run game.

Remember, they kept Cam Cameron. So that is a distinct possibility since a few of their losses were the direct result of ignoring Ray Rice and letting Unibrow throw 40 times. Put him with Caldwell, and...well, Ravens fans need to be concerned, let's put it that way.

Does that mean Ray Rice will end somewhere else this off season? Hes such a weapon, but this new NFL Culture of QBs are everything is making him so undervalued and underused. Every time the Ravens used Ray Rice consistently, almost no one ever beat them. You ignore him, and they lose.

Yep. Could have been Caldwell was just passing through on the way to Baltimore, and it was just two old colleague's and friends getting together for lunch.

If some haven't noticed yet, the Ravens have almost always used a two-headed backfield during Flacco's time there with Mcgahee, Rice, and Williams. They also used fullbacks like McClain and just recently Vonta Leach. Cameron may be a pass-happy OC, but he gets the right idea sometimes. Creating a balanced attack to cover up for Flacco.

I really hope they move away from that tactic which made them moderately successful.

I hope that is what they are thinking, then it makes it easier for the Steelers to beat. Baltimore struggles mightily when the game is put in the hands of Flacco (unless the other team is running prevent)
