Jets owner Woody Johnson said today that receiver Santonio Holmes will be back in 2012, despite being at the center of the locker-room fragmentation that ultimately doomed the Jets this season.
In his first meeting with Jets beat writers since the season ended at 8-8 without a playoffs bid, Johnson said he is "concerned but confident" the relationship between Holmes and quarterback Mark Sanchez can be salvaged. He does not regret giving Holmes a five-year, $45 million contract this past offseason, explaining, "he may be one of the best players we have ever had here" and . He also denied money is the reason Holmes will be back.
"They've won a lot of games together, and one is good for the other," Johnson said. "Santonio makes the quarterback a lot better, and vice versa. So they have a good reason to iron this thing out. I think they can do it."
Johnson expressed faith in Sanchez, though he was less unequivocal at first. Asked if Sanchez is both the starter in 2012 and the Jets' franchise quarterback, he did not answer directly, saying, "I have a lot of confidence in Mark Sanchez."
Asked again if Sanchez is the 2012 starter with 100 percent certainty, he said there "is no such thing as 100 percent" in this business.
Barring injury?
"Barring whatever," Johnson said, "yes." Later, he added: "We think he's our guy."
But would the Jets pursue Colts star Peyton Manning, if he is available this offseason and healthy? Johnson said the Jets would "look at everything."
