View Full Version : I can't count.....

I can't count how many helmet to helmet hits I've seen in this year's playoffs that have gone unnoticed by the refs and uncommented on by the network announcing crews. And I'm not talking about acceptable helmet to helmet contact, such as a running back, I'm talking about quarterbacks getting blasted in the head and neck area, and receiver's galore getting cracked in the head in the open field.
I understand it's a fast game and the refs wont see everything, but to me it looks as if the offending party isn't wearing black and gold with only one decal on his helmet, it's never seen at all! And worse yet, the announcing crew either ignores it or racks it up to a good hard hit!
Hey I'm all in favor of old school football. To me any player that is upright of his own accord should never be referred to as "defenseless". What ever happened to a quarterback bearing some responsibility for not putting his receiver in harm's way to begin with?
That said I'm sick of the double standard that the NFL clearly employs. If James Harrison or Ryan Clark hit anyone too hard the flag never seems to be far behind. And on the rare occasion the refs "miss" one, the announcers sure jump in with both feet. Hell I'm just waiting for the day that Harrison is arrested coming off the field.
Anyway call me whiner if you like, but to me it's so far over the top that it's making my head want to explode!! :frusty:
Seriously if I were the Steelers I would catalog all the questionable hits from all the games being played. Wait until the league has had the chance to take action against the offending parties( which of course they wont) then have a party for the press, show a film with all the helmet to helmet hits that went unflagged, and worse yet unpunished by big brother, to point out the double standard once and for all!
As long as the remnants of our current defense remains intact, I'm afraid we wont be granted a level playing field by the league!

There's a reason I stopped watching after the Steelers bowed out...

Wow, I thought I was the only one who saw all those uncalled hits! Good post Zu!

What sort of reaction would be going on around the league right now if James Harrison had performed the forearm shiver that Ray Ray got away with today?

Too bad we don't live in an age where video footage is available. :sarcasm:
The league/Goodell can not be defended for its obvious inconsistencies. Refs miss a call, yeah that's possible, they can't catch everything. The video tapes don't miss any calls. There is no excuse for the league to consistently be inconsistent.

My DVR was about 90% full. I cleared and watched college basketball. I understand the NFL may have been playing some games this weekend...?

I'm glad that you guys see the samething I have been watching as well. When steeler players hit too hard it is always a flag followed by a fine. Other teams get away with murder and, what drives me nuts about the helmet to helmet rule it only applies to certain players. A runner can get struck right in the head after the defender has a 10-20 yard running start on him they gets laid out. Then you have a play where the helmet just touches the face mask and, then there are 6 flags before that player hits the ground. Then yesterday Rodgers gets a bs call from the refs for helmet to helmet contact against the giants. There still are too many games that the ref's have a say who wins or who gets the most calls in there favor. I found it amazing that the cheats & the rats did not get any flags against them in their games over the weekend. Something is up with that.

I normally hate Buck/Aikmen combo, but the last two weekends they have been the only ones with the balls to call out the refs on missed calls and penalties.

You guys do realize that the rule is that if a it's a running back or the receiver has established him as a runner, then helmet-to-helmet hits are legal (which makes no sense if the NFL is trying to actually protect players from concussions).
Only a QB or a "defenseless receiver" getting hit helmet-to-helmet are illegal.

I understand it, but still saw many illegal hits that went unnoticed by the refs and the commentating crews. The Ravens got away with at least two illegal hits yesterday. One by Ray Ray on the aformentioned forearm shiver, the other was a 3rd quarter play where 31 of the Ravens helmet to helmet hit causes a 3rd down incompletion.

There were still lots of Goodell hits on receivers that weren't called.

Because in the interest of player safety, we all know that only QBs and defenseless WRs are the only players that get injured.

How about that BS H2H call lastnight against the Giants? I was rootin' for GB the entire game, but that baby H2H contact was an F'n joke and pissed me off even though it helped out the team I was pullin' for. It gave GB a fresh set of downs with resulted in 7 points during a play off game. Unacceptable manipulation of the game, and score IMO.
