There are 1,290 miles and 4,584 feet of elevation separating Pittsburgh and Denver, but their NFL franchises often appear to have been separated at birth.

They have met six times in the playoffs, the most meetings with any opponent for either team. Each has won three.

They have seen the winner of those six meetings proceed to the Super Bowl five times, most recently the Steelers' title in 2006.

They each have had star quarterbacks wearing No. 7 in Ben Roethlisberger and John Elway, with Roethlisberger reiterating this week, "That's why I wear the number."

But not even the sum of all that could begin to explain why the Steelers' experiences in Denver have been especially wild, wonderful and, above all, weird.

And the oddities apparently start at a young age.

"I was a Bronco hater," recalled injured Steelers defensive end Aaron Smith, raised in Colorado Springs. "My family loved them. I guess I was that jerk kid that always wanted to root against everybody, like a kid here rooting for the Ravens."..................
