The announcement today that Antonio Brown had won the Steelers MVP award in a vote by his teammates was stunning. I listed the candidates here this morning, led by Ben Roethlisberger, and never mentioned Antonio Brown.

Nothing against Brown, but he's not the team's leading receiver in yards, catches or touchdowns. In fact, he has three touchdowns, one on a punt return, and Mike Wallace has 8.

The fact that Brown broke the team record for all-purpose yards on Saturday may have pushed him into the forefront among his teammates when it came time to vote.

The team probably knows better than anybody in the media or on this forum. I just happen to agree with it.

Maybe when Bouchette becomes a Steelers player, his opinion about it will matter...

I don't know how you measure clutchness, but the guy always seems to be there on 3rd and 4th down. One weird thing is a lot of folks here talk about our bad starting field position which it usually seems to be, but how does he set a team record for all purpose yards in a year when it seems so bad? Only thing I can figure is the increase in yards by bringing out kicks to the 20 that would have been touch backs before, seems I've seen a lot of that this season with all the returners in the league

But anyhow, good for Antonio, I'm sure his team mates know his contribution better than anyone and I for one would rather have that than a PB.

but then I read this from Ed Bouchette’s Giants game notes:

“The coaches believe Antonio Brown is not smart enough to grasp the routes he has to run as a wide receiver. I’m told his roster spot is in jeopardy because of it. Look, Steelers coaches once explained that Johnny Unitas wasn’t smart enough either before they released him. Brown is on my team, if for nothing else right now than as a return man. Let’s hope the coaches come around to that way of thinking. Brown showed a good burst right off the ball on his returns and made good decisions where to run. Stefan Logan, for all his speed and quickness, has neither of those two attributes.”

WTG #Steelers Antonio Brown named team MVP with 2048 all purpose yards (Record) and 1000+ yards receiving. Team's youngest MVP in 20+ years.

I thought about that, and it seems likely, what with guys running kicks out from 6, 7 yards deep in the end zone ALL THE TIME now. But if you look at the stats, exactly the opposite is true. As a team, we've had fewer kick return yards this season than any of the past several years. Of course, there's still one game to go, but we're not even close to pulling even. Opponents' kickoff return yardage is down noticeably as well. Overall, he's gotten the return yards under much tougher conditions.

2011 - 785 yards (Brown 664)
2010 - 1,153 yards (Sanders 688)
2009 - 1,581 yards (Logan 1,466)
2008 - 1,013 yards (G. Russell 371)
2007 - 1,145 yards (Rossum 885)
2006 - 1,214 yards (Davenport 448)
2005 - 1,208 yards (Q. Morgan 583)

Players get old and their skills diminish.

Could not the same be said of sports journalists? I've sincerely questioned Bouchette more this year than in any other that I can remember. Think Ed may be losing it...
