If we don't win the division, this will probably be one of the two games (the second meeting vs the Ravens being the other) that we'll really be kicking ourselves over.

I'll throw up the pictures later. It's late, er, early in the morning, and I want to grab some sleep before kickoff.

First Half

- Kickoffs: 3.92 (-5), 4.03 (1)

- Starting o-line: Starks, Essex, Legursky, Foster, Gilbert

- Wallace's long catch and run on first drive. Had a screen play called, Ben motions Ward to put 4 receivers on one side and draw all the attention by the LBs over there. Left Wallace one on one. Picture.

- Breakdown of Ben's first INT. I'll type it up once I add the pictures since they tell a lot of the story.

Lets take a look of what Ben sees pre-snap:

Wallace has inside leverage on the corner which is what we're looking for on the post. The receiver needs to get to the inside. The main issue here is trying to move the SS because he's in the path of the post. Really, a post isn't a viable route in this situation. It's best to cross the safeties face on say, an "in" route. Ben needs to move the safety or not make the throw.

Ben never looks him off and the safety reads him the whole way, making it a very difficult throw even if he isn't the one who makes the INT. The CB is playing outside trail technique, playing to the outside hip to prevent an out/corner route (CB would have inside position in any such situation). With the safety to the inside, he's able to freely jump the route and make the INT.

- Pictures of San Fran stacking WRs to force off coverage on a 3rd and 5, picking up a first down by the WR that motioned.

- Troy absolutely got sealed to the inside by Delaine Walker one one run blitz that Gore busted for a sizeable gain.

- Joe Staley and an inital block by Iupati drove Heyward back a good four yards off the line on one play. Yikes!

- Just as he's done on Gresham against Cincy, Troy lined up like a CB on Crabtree on 1st and goal from the 2.

- Our alginment of the DTs in our goalline formation look similar to how Greene/Greenwood would line up in a "V" shape. Picture:

- Two pictures to show a really athletic recvoery by Gilbert after an inside counter move by Aldon Smith.

Watch how he's already planted his right foot ready to seal the edge. A lot of tackles aren't going to recover and get beat to the inside. Not Gilbert.

He's able to get himself square to Smith and keep him at bay. Great job.

- Hadn't seen much of Cortez Allen on defense in the past few games until Monday.

- We're still running exotic blitzex. On one play, Keisel drops into the flats to cover Gore, Worilds is lined up like a MIKE and blitzes up the middle, and Farrior/Allen come from the right side.

- Have to love Ben's comment after seeing a fan run out onto the field during the second blackout. "Where's James Harrison when you need him"

- Foote again replaced Farrior with 5 minutes left in the 2nd quarter. Becoming a trend.

- Keenan Lewis and Cortez Allen are your gunners and jammers. I expect Keenan to keep that job with Curtis Brown going on IR.

- Obviously, really poor clock management at the end of the half. At the very least, not losing the four yards on the last play before the throw to Brown makes it a 51 yard attempt which we likley would've tried since we did later in the game.

- Lewis and Cromartie-Smith were the wedgebusters. Didn't realy see Battle out there. Saw him in uniform with his helmet on but wearing sweats overtop his pants on the sidelines. I know Arians talked about swelling being a big issue because of the plane trip. Probably the issue here.

- Tried to pull Essex a few times to no avail.

- Congrats to Heath for passing Elbie Nickel for most receptions by a TE in franchise history!

- Kudos to Arians for using the draw play a lot more, something we don't do often and aren't that good at it overall. Only way we could run on San Fran was to spread them out and create some running lanes that way. Certainly couldn't move that defensive line.

- Another kudos to Suisham for booting a 51 yarder. Think Tirico said only one 50+ has been made at Candlestick all season long.

- Credit to San Fran for responding with a TD after our FG.

- On Davis' second catch that put the 49ers at the one, everyone in the box bit on the run fake.

- Aldon Smith tosses Legursky aside and gets a clean shot on Ben. Picture:

- Woodley removed from the game near the end of the 3rd quarter.

- Hard to tell but I think Moore got hiurt planting his leg to try and stop an inside spin move by an OLB.

- Troy pulled late in 4th quarter. Mundy replaced him.

- Frankly, from whistle to whistle, I didn't see the ankle affect Ben too much. He wasn't as mobile though still moved in the pocket some and had good zip on his throws. Was stepping into a lot of them and his throws as a whole, weren't anymore inaccurate as they would be on a typical day. Obviously the ankle did hurt, don't get me wrong. He was a flamingo after every throw, standing on one leg.

- Sly had two block in the back calls on punt returns.

- After Aldon Smith's first sack that was negated by penalty against Starks, he lined up on him 95% of the time the rest of the game.

- Starks' performance wanted me to put in Jonathan Scott. Aside from playing well against Suggs, Starks has been playing below average. I said from the get-go that is was part masked by getting a lot of help from backs and TEs.

- One bright spot along the line was Gilbert. Wasn't exactly always the prettiest but he kept Ben clean.

- Very striking comment. Tomlin to Harbaugh at the end of the game - "You're the best tean tonight and you know it".

Sacks

- 2nd and 9, 11:39 left in 4th. 11, shotgun. 49ers bring four. DTs corss, Foster picks up a looping Justin Smith well. Aldon Smith bullrushes Starks, gets under his pads with easy, and then slips aside and strip sacks Ben, 49ers recover. I'll throw up a picture of Smith getting into Starks later.

- 2nd and 3, 8:30 left in 4th. 11, shotgun. 49ers rush four. Stunt with Aldon and Justin Smith with Aldon looping inside. Justin slants outside and carries Essex with him, opening up a lane for Aldon. No communciation, no one on the line passes the lineman off to each other.

- 2nd and 4, 4:34 left in 4th. 11, shotgun. 49ers bring four. Again, another inside stunt. Essex too late picking it up.

There was another sack negated be an illegal contact where Aldon Smith bullrushes Starks for a sack. Not counting it but worth pointing it out. One other thought. Pretty sad that all three of the 49ers sacks came by rushing just four. On at least two of the sacks, we were keeping six.

Sack Counter (Game)

Max Starks: 2

good job chidi . although i didnt think ben got the usual zip on some of his throws cos he couldnt obviously step into them as well.
