Meek selected as Pirates All-Star game representative
Sunday, July 04, 2010
By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Evan Meek was named the Pirates' All-Star this afternoon.
Meek, 27, has a 0.98 ERA that is the lowest in Major League Baseball, and his 37 appearances lead the staff, but his status as a middle reliever rather than a closer could have hurt him. The Pirates had not had a non-closing reliever chosen for the All-Star Game since Mace Brown in 1938.
The All-Star Game will be played July 13 at Angels Stadium in Anaheim, Calif.
"It's surprising," Meek said. "You usually see a lot of starters or closers go to the game. Considering our other candidate in [Andrew McCutcheon] it's a big surprise. He was very deserving to go, and I think he should have gone. But it will be awesome to represent Pittsburgh. And to just be part of the game, it's a real honor. I'm still kind of taking it all in."
Meek was told just before noon by manager John Russell.
McCutchen, 23, seems like a glaring omission. He has batted .299 with seven home runs and 24 RBIs, as well as 16 doubles, four triples, 20 steals in 26 attempts and a .379 on-base percentage that is the best among all of the league's center fielders.
On top of that, he has started all but one of the Pirates' 81 games and has been outstanding defensively.
The Pirates had two All-Stars last year, Freddy Sanchez and Zach Duke.
The Pirates have been represented by only one player in 14 of the past 17 All-Star Games.

So the idiot Phillies coach is going to put Capps in for the whole 7th inning and not also give Meeks a chance... The Phillies organization just went done another notch in my book.. It's a once and a life time thing and everyone should of had a chance to play... Meek can throw in the high 90's also and usually does with his strong arm..

Evan Meek might not have made an appearance in the National League's 3-1 All-Star Game win Tuesday night in Anaheim, but from meeting Will Ferrell to spending time with the game's best, the Bucs reliever savored his All-Star experience.

NL manager Charlie Manuel never called on Meek in Tuesday's 3-1 win by the Senior Circuit, which meant that for the second straight year, the Pirates' All-Star representatives did not play in the game. Neither Freddy Sanchez nor Zach Duke was used in last year's Midsummer Classic.
Meek showed a hint of disappointment afterward about not actually taking the mound at Angel Stadium, but it took him only seconds to step back and rather put the entire two-day experience into proper perspective. "Obviously I would have loved to have pitched," said Meek, who never warmed up in the 'pen. "But just being here and being among these guys was good enough for me. There were a few situations where I thought I might get in there. I'm happy that we won. I'm happy that I got to experience it."

Can't wait for his All-Star shirt to arrive this week.

Yeah, I wanted to see him play. I was pissed when the game was over and he didn't play.

To be fair, there were other NL pitchers who didn't make an appearance. Lincecum, Hudson, and Rhodes didn't get to play either.
