Publicly, Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall said last week that it's difficult to get the team's much-maligned running game going when the offensive coordinator calls so many pass plays.

Privately, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians had a simple message for Mendenhall and backup Ike Redman.

" 'You want to run the ball more, run it better,' " Arians recalled telling the two.

So Mendenhall did in the 35-7 win Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals at Heinz Field.

Redman, as well.

"That was a lot better," Arians said. "I saw backs breaking tackles. I saw a much better surge ...

Mendy seems like he needs constant motivation. Arians should give him a swift kick before every game or threaten to bench him.

Mendy, time to mature and show up every game, not just when you are prodded.

The reason the run game worked?

It was set up by the pass!

Mendy is kind of a dull witted guy.......and a bit of an attention whore.

We have 2 good RBs that also complement each other well. Hopefully they can be a tandem for 5 or 6 more years? We shall see.

It was odd...I noticed Redman doing a little juking, which is Mendy territory, and I also saw Mendy running North to South, which is usually Redman territory. Maybe they are rubbing off on each other....

How come we barely ever run Left? It seems like the one time Mendy ran to the left against the Bengals it went for like 15 yards. It's not like Gilbert is a much better run-blocker than Starks or anything.

it's called the O-line, arians. you want to see better running then tell the O-line to open holes. after that throw some run plays into your grab bag.
