Erickson vows to 'restore the honor'
Penn State's interim president tries to get university moving again in wake of scandal

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- In his first major action since taking over as interim president of Penn State University, Rod Erickson outlined to trustees and administrators his plan to "get the university back moving again."

Less than a day after that board dismissed football coach Joe Paterno and forced the resignation of president Graham Spanier amid a child sex abuse scandal that has drawn national attention, Mr. Erickson said the university needs to learn from its mistakes as it moves forward.

"That was very much the tone of my remarks: concern, humility, resolve to make things right, to restore the honor of Penn State," he said.

What college sports is all about! It's about the students. It's not about the faculty, the football staff, the tragedy's off the field. It's not about the dark shit that happened. It's not about one person's opinion. The University is about those students in the stands, those players walking out arm in arm showing unity. That's what Penn State is about.

Oh sure thing, the reason their Hat is on sale in Walmart in California is because of the "students". The reason their T-shirts sell in stores in Upstate NY is because of the "Students". It has nothing to do with the coach who helped to cover up the acts of a Pedophile who did anything he could to keep his Football Program from getting a bad name. The money made from the Football Program, what is it, $72 Million a year had NOTHING to do with the choices the Administrators made in regards to covering up the digusting vile acts of one of their Football Coaches...is that the "spin"?

Good luck with that...Perv State University.

So what do the administrators have to do with the students? So Penn State is made up of a couple head football coaches and a few administrators? The thing is, even if they came out with it in 1999 or 2002, it wouldn't affect the football program at all. It wasn't a football violation...lol. Do you know Joe Paterno's side of the story yet? No you don't. No one does. I find it ironic that the people on this board want to call Penn State names and pass judgement on a coach/person without hearing his side of the story...YET when Ben Roethlisberger "raped" two girls...we couldn't pass judgement until we heard the whole story...lol.

Does he mean that he wishes he was more involved with recruiting? Or does he mean that he wishes he'd have gone to the cops when he heard his #1 guy was raping a kid in the facilities locker room. Go read the endictment and then defend Joe some more.

Unlike Ben's accuser's Sanduskey's were willing to subject themselves to the scrutiny of a Grand Jury, and will also subject themselves to a vigorous cross examination in a criminal trial. This is what actual victims do. Though it's obviously going to be very tough on them in the short term. In the long term though I would imagine real rape victims ( as opposed to Ben's accusers) don't start to get real closure until after their tormentor is made to face the full consequences of their actions. Civil litigation is put on hold until after the threat to society is removed. The situations aren't not even remotely comparable, and you've managed to insult Ben, reasonable people who defended Ben, and the victims of Sanduskey in one fell swoop. Nice job.

And if you read the Grand Jury indictment it stretches the bounds of reason to believe that there wasn't some form of cover-up involved that allowed Sanduskey to victimize these young boys as long as he did.

They haven't even scratched the surface yet. When this all comes out there will probably be a serious move to remove Joe Pa's statue from University property imo.

While I completely disagree with the opinion Franco expressed in regards to Paterno's firing. Given his history with Joe Pa, and the program I can understand the basis of his continued loyalty to them. I even admire him for expressing an obviously unpopular opinion when it would be easier for him to say nothing.

I really think the casino was wrong to terminate Franco for exercising his right to free speech. I find it hard to believe the people of western Pennsylvania would confuse Franco's loyalty to someone he obviously greatly respects with some sort of tactic approval of Sandusky's alleged crimes.

Speaking of Penn State football, what about the game Saturday?

Even thought they are at home, I have serious reservations about picking my Buckeyes. They simply can't throw the football. It'll help to have DeVier Posey back, but what possible rapport could he have with Braxton Miller, since they haven't played together all season (suspended players are only allowed to participate as the scout team)? The Bucks defense has been uncharacteristically suspect this year, especially late in games (sound familiar Steelers fans?).

However, they did beat Wisconsin and they do play better at home. If they try to run 90% of the time against the Lions, they'll lose. If they can throw the ball even semi-effectively, I think they'll pull it off.

I guess the players are going to meet and shake hands at the beginning of the game again. That's a nice gesture...as I've pointed out, none of the PSU players have anything at all to do with the ongoing scandal, and it's unfair to taint them with it.

I like the punishments expect for the Scholarship ordeal. Many PSU fans are upset, but it is a rightful judgement. It's not about football, or which college you like it's the fact that a whole football organization and school hid child rape for the sake of a game. Now punishing students and athletes, that's a little much.

So that pretty much means, Penn State has not won a game since 1997 and now have the longest losing streak in College Football. Eddie Robinson is now the All-Time winningest coach again.

This is simply awful for Penn State and everyone involved and it was all because of one man named Sandusky. But I guess this is a lesson for everyone. The sport is not bigger than the integrity of the university. Penn State has no choice but to persevere from here on out.

I'm reading a lot of the articles and while I hate to do it, the comments. Generally speaking, people either are saying they disagree with punishing innocent student-athletes and coaches because of the actions of a select few or they think PSU got off too easy. I couldn't care less about the punishment. Whatever, kill the program, who cares it's just football and it's just a game. What I'm concerned about is the same people who are crying from the rooftops that football shouldn't be placed above all else are lumping all the PSU students and alumni into this scandal saying they are to blame for promoting a football-first culture. So now my degree from Penn State is worth less after I busted my ass for 6 years because I promoted a football culture? Well to those people I say fuck you.

Paterno deserves everything he got. My only problem is that the punishment now extends to every single member of the Penn State university. With that $60 million fine, which in reality will probably be more like +$100 M when you factor in lost post game appearances and revenue, there are less scholarships, probably higher tuition, probably reduced research grants, lower salaries for employees and bonuses, etc.

That's where it goes too far. Now to be honest I am a Pitt student and am biased against Penn State, but the punishment was served properly to them except the fact that every single student, and professor will be punished as well. The scholarship deal is a joke and they knew coming into it that fining them will raise tuition in a time when going to college is tough. Everything else though, ALL HAIL PITT

if you read the Grand Jury indictment it stretches the bounds of reason to believe that there wasn't some form of cover-up involved that allowed Sanduskey to victimize these young boys as long as he did.

They haven't even scratched the surface yet. When this all comes out there will probably be a serious move to remove Joe Pa's statue from University property imo.

Damn, I posted this on November 12. Saw that one coming. But truthfully I wish facts had surfaced to exonerate Paterno and the Univeristy.

Its a shame really. Almost all of this could have been avoided if someone just would have put the children in front of thier career and reputation.

We just got home from PSU and the campus was pretty quiet. There was a lot of people that seemed to have lost their spunk. A lot of the local businesses have signs in the window claiming support for the football team, but all I can really say is that the camput is quite. We were there yesterday and today.

They got curb stomped.

$60M fine, 4 year bowl ban, 10 scholarships a year for 4 years, players allowed to transfer with no restrictions and allowed to play immediately, all wins struck from record from 1997-2011

The football team won't be relevant in the B10 for at least seven years. I don't see them getting anything better than 3* recruits (other than die-hard Penn State fans) for the next few years. A lot of the really good high school prospects will look at other schools that can compete in championship games and bowls instead of spending much of their college career banned from them.

So look for teams like Ohio State, Pitt, Michigan, West Virginia, Michigan State, and Wisconsin to get a lot of those players.

I'm not a big Penn State fan, but I like his attitude...

Penn State LB Michael Mauti not a fan of new transfer rules
Mauti comes out swinging

Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti will admit that he sometimes has a temper.

For three days now, Mauti has fielded calls from coaches at other schools, listened to stories of coaches waiting on campus to solicit his teammates and try to pick over what remains of the Nittany Lions roster.

On Monday the NCAA stressed that it wanted to 'change the culture' of college athletics. To Mauti, that's message that he feels hasn't gotten across.

Penn State's Silas Redd transfers to USC

Silas Redd has chosen to withdraw from Penn State and transfer to USC. ESPN.com first reported the news.

Redd took advantage of the NCAA sanctions against the Nittany Lions that allow players to transfer anywhere and be immediately eligible. The junior tailback will be expected to have an instant impact for the Trojans, who lack quality depth behind last year’s starter, Curtis McNeal.

In a statement shared with the Stamford (Conn.) Advocate, Redd expressed his gratitude to Penn State's former and current coaches, and the Penn State community.

"I think it is important to say that this situation is not something that I wished for myself, but it has happened, nonetheless. My family and I have spent many hours in recent days trying to decide what will be best for me as I look to the future both personally and professionally," Redd said.

Silas Redd's transfer to USC gives the Trojans a No. 1 running back weeks ahead of their opener. (AP Photo)

"We have weighed the pros and cons of staying at Penn State and leaving Penn State, attending USC and not attending USC, and I can honestly say that, ultimately, this decision is about so much more than football. I continue to have aspirations for my life, and as my family and I considered the bigger picture both on and off the field it became clearer to me that USC will be the best fit for my academic, athletic, and personal needs over the next two years."

Redd, a Connecticut native, isn’t traveling across the country to be a penciled in backup. He’ll challenge McNeal for the No. 1 job. Last season, Redd rushed for 1,241 yards.

NCAA sanctions against USC allow the team to carry only 75 scholarship players. The Trojans are currently maxed out. To make room for Redd, a walk-on who has earned a scholarship will likely have to give up the year-to-year contracts.

"At USC, we've seen both sides of this issue, having lost a number of players to transfer due to our NCAA sanctions in 2010,"USC athletic director Pat Haden said in a statement released Tuesday. "But Lane Kiffin and his coaches would not be doing their job if they did not try to improve our team every single day. There is a specific need here for a player like Silas Redd, so Lane and our coaches recruited him within the guidelines set up in this instance by the NCAA."

Redd has two seasons of eligibility remaining

You know what 86Ward, I really don't think so. Now bear with me as I usually have a hard time getting thoughts from my brain to my finger tips. First reason - Bill O'Brien. He can walk into the living rooms of prospects and tell them that he knows what it takes to get them to the NFL. Not many coaches can walk in and say they were Tom Brady's OC. Yes, the restricted scholarship number will hurt, but the upside to Bill O'Brien recruiting is huge. Second - redshirting could help counteract the no bowls for four years. If a player comes in next year and is redshirted, he will still have two chances at a bowl game. And the number of chances only increases yearly for players to make it to a bowl. Third - there are going to alot of alumn helping the recruiting, and the likes of Mauti and this years senior crew will also help talk up the new program and draw attention to it. Fourth - America has a short attention span and the Sandusky thing will soon be a thing of the past and all but forgotten about.

Hope that made sense, but I have hope that the program will stay competitive for awhile until the sanctions are over with.

James Franklin, formerly the Vanderbilt HC, is now the HC at Penn State. I have to say, great hire! He has already gotten some 3-4 star recruits that were committed to Vandy to commit to PSU, and he also has 4-star QB O'Conner to reaffirm his commitment to PSU. I think Franklin is going to be a great coach for PSU, and hopefully unlike BoB, for years to come!

Bringing over high quality recruits from Vandy, getting guys to stay at Penn State, and a commitment to recruit the whole state of PA as well as other areas. Saying all the right things! Let's see how it translates into production. At the very least you've got to love his energy.

Yes, they have done well considering the situation. The run game has got to improve. I also did not like how they kept throwing the ball at the end of the game. They should just have kept it on the ground with how far ahead they were and how little time was left. I sure hope Franklin works out. They have had too many different coaches since Paterno.

That was way too easy for Ohio.

That Interception and the clock on the FG Attempt? That's some serious BS calls there.

I think PSU should've went with the all white uniforms for the white out.

Gotta keep the Big 10 favorite in the hunt for the playoff spot

BS call on the interception. That was clearly an incomplete pass, announcers saying that it was a bad feed. Really, with all this technology, they didn't see what I saw on my stolen cable TV?

Defense playing well, love the white out games, WE ARE.....

Worst call I've seen this year, college or pro!!

Officials can't even call time outs right.

Got the win, but didn't look that great doing it. Hackenberg and the INTs has got to stop.

Nice win and makes them bowl eligible. However, I'm a bit disappointed in Hackenberg today. He's really regressing compared to last year.

Senior Class was decimated by the Sandusky Scandal. Hopefully they will start the rebound in the Bowl Game and ride it out from there with the younger classes.

Bowl game was live in UK tonight . I thought it was a very good game . Penn States kicker looked good . I thought the QB , Hakenberg , showed some good poise for 19 years old . His arm strength looked very good as well .

PSU beats BC in overtime to win the Pinstripe Bowl. Great win, even though the only reason it happened was because of a missed extra point by BC. Either way, Hack was a beast, 4 TD's with several great throws, and it was great to see Ficken make a clutch FG and extra point to seal the deal especially after his kicking history at PSU (I remember a PSU fan say "Fuckin' Ficken")
