STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Days after losing the job he held for nearly a half century, former Penn State coach Joe Paterno was diagnosed with a treatable form of lung cancer.

Scott Paterno, the Hall of Fame coach's son, said in a statement Friday that his father's doctors are optimistic the 84-year-old Paterno will make a full recovery.

Scott Paterno said in a text message to ESPN.com's Ivan Maisel the five-year survival rate for Joe Paterno's cancer is more than 70 percent, "but obviously his age is a complicating factor."

Too bad Joe didn't get this diagnosis around 1993. Not being mean, but if he could have died before he crossed paths with or it become apparent that Sandusky was a perv, his legacy as one of the all time good guys would have remained forever intact.

Kind of an ironic coincidence to discover you get lung cancer and announce it NOW at all times. The guy has been stressed out enough.

While I am very sensitive to Joe Pa's condition, and am sorry that he has cancer, this just seems like a ploy to garner some sympathy given his current situation.
