Kiffin confirms Seantrel Henderson getting cold feet

Posted by John Taylor on July 2, 2010 4:26 PM ET

There have been several reports over the last couple weeks that, in the wake of sanctions received by the USC football program program, Seantrel Henderson was having second thoughts regarding his commitment to the Trojans.

Twice, the reports stated, members of the program have flown out to Henderson's Minnesota home in an effort to solidify what's once again become a shaky commitment. Henderson did not report for freshman orientation earlier this month as expected, which led to one of the trips. Additionally, there was a report from a Minnesota paper Thursday that had Henderson leaning toward moving on to Miami, which was believed to be the lineman's second choice after 'SC.

Henderson himself has refused to comment on his status, and his high-profile father would only give a "no comment" when asked about his son's plans, adding further fire to the smoke coming from the Henderson camp. Now, a person with a vested interest in the whole roller coaster ride is acknowledging that there is indeed an issue with the lineman.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, head coach Lane Kiffin has confirmed the previous reports, telling the paper that the school has "basically [had to] re-recruit" the offensive tackle rated as the top prospect in the 2010 recruiting class by many services.

Kiffin seemed to be getting a bit frustrated with the situation -- and Henderson -- as well.

"Sometimes I think I know his main concern and then it seems to change the next day," Kiffin said. "Every other freshman has got here when they were supposed to and is sticking with it."

Still, Kiffin remains somewhat hopeful that Henderson will reaffirm his commitment in the near future and join the fellow members of USC's '10 recruiting class.

"I hope in the end Seantrel sees what every other freshman in this class has... that one or two games isn't why you choose a university," Kiffin said. "They didn't come to SC because of a bowl game the first or second year. They came here because of the education; they came here because of the football program."

That's what I am hoping for!

And as for Kiffin saying that a player doesn't choose a school because of one or two games in two seasons is complete horseshit and he knows it. Players ranked like Henderson choose a school for exposure and bowl games, for the chance to become a top 10 NFL Draft pick. Most of them don't even stay four years to get the two degrees, they stay three years because the NFL's rules force them to.

USC releasing recruit Henderson

By Joe Schad
ESPN

USC is releasing offensive tackle recruit Seantrel Henderson from his national letter of intent, coach Lane Kiffin said Tuesday.

Henderson, an incoming freshman and one of the nation's top recruits, signed with USC after initially delaying past national signing day over concerns the program might face NCAA sanctions, which indeed occurred.

The NCAA recently banned USC from bowl games for two years and imposed severe scholarship restrictions following an investigation surrounding Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Reggie Bush. USC has appealed, arguing the sanctions are too severe and "inconsistent with precedent."

Henderson also strongly considered Miami, Ohio State and Minnesota during the recruiting process.

Kiffin could have kept Henderson bound to his national letter, requiring him to either report or enroll elsewhere and pay his own way for a year before being eligible in 2011. Instead, Kiffin and USC are essentially allowing Henderson to enroll at any school immediately and be eligible to play as early as this season.

USC is still hopeful that Henderson will decide to enroll at USC.

"We are releasing Seantrel Henderson out of his national letter of intent with zero penalties and no restrictions. Seantrel has been great through the whole process and we wish him the best of luck with his decision," Kiffin said.

USC could have limited the other schools Henderson could pursue, such as eliminating schools within the Pac-10 or schools USC will face in the next few seasons. Instead, Kiffin took the approach that he wanted players on campus who know they want to be Trojans.

Henderson, who is listed at 6-foot-7 and 295 pounds, played for Cretin-Derham High School in Minnesota. Henderson was ranked by ESPN's Scouts Inc., as the top offensive tackle in the nation and the No. 8 player in the ESPNU 150.

Kiffin landed 15 four- and five-star recruits for what ESPN's Scouts Inc. ranked the seventh-best class in the nation.

Looks like he is leaning towards Miami.

Henderson headed to Hurricanes?

Indications are it might not be long before Seantrel Henderson becomes the last addition to the 2010 Miami signing class. While there is likely some wiggle room (he could always back out and go to Ohio State), the word is Miami is his first choice.

Ugh, the Buckeyes play Miami this year and next. We'd go up against him for sure next season. Lets hope he comes to Columbus!

And I am happy if he chooses Miami. I just love watching that USC empire crumble!

First Ohio losses LeBenidict to Miami now Seantrel.

Seantrel Henderson is all about the 'U.' (For real this time.)

By Matt Hinton

College football fans are understandably skeptical when it comes to anything related to the recruitment of Seantrel Henderson. The massively hyped Minnesota offensive linemen finally committed to USC in February but didn't sign, finally signed with USC in March but didn't show up for freshman orientation, and finally got out of his commitment to the Trojans earlier this week. He doesn't come across as the most decisive fellow.

But the New York Times has it on good authority from the Henderson clan Friday that Henderson is bound for Miami this fall, as expected. And the 'U' logo on Henderson's Facebook page says this time it is his final decision.

The 6-8, 335-pound behemoth instantly becomes the jewel of the 'Canes' incoming class, which only featured one other player, five-star Ohio cornerback Latwan Anderson, ranked among Rivals' top 100 overall. Henderson expects to arrive on Aug. 3, and will be eligible immediately under the unusually generous terms of his release from USC. Usually it would include a mandatory season on the bench. He has a chance to see the field immediately, too, on a rebuilding line that lost both of last year's starting tackles

If it ends there, the Song of Seantrel Henderson will still go down as the most melodramatic recruiting saga of the characteristically angsty Internet age. Most of the credit for his winding narrative goes to the heavy-handed NCAA sanctions against USC handed down last month. The prospect of those sanctions understandably delayed Henderson's signing in February. Those cautious instincts turned out to be equal to the ones that eventually convinced him to believe coach Lane Kiffin's assurances that the Trojans weren't going to be hit hard for the scandal surrounding former star Reggie Bush, and that Henderson had no reason to worry.

We may know at some point whether it was the sanctions themselves or the broken promise that pushed Henderson away from USC, but for now, Kiffin's loss is Randy Shannon's gain. (Unless Seantrel turns out to be a genuine flake, a la another former Kiffin recruiting coup, Bryce Brown. In which case, nobody wins, except the bloggers.)
