Twenty-eight percent of NFL arrests due to DUI (http://www.duiattorney.com/news/7259-twenty-eight-percent-of-nfl-arrests-due-to-dui)

The USAToday pointed out an interesting statistic today in light of recent reports of NFL players with DUI arrests: about one-third of all arrests of NFL players are due to DUI or DWI.
The issue is so prevalent that the NFL has paired up with anti-DUI organization Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to introduce a program similar to a victim's impact panel for all Rookies. Additionally, some NFL teams use the Safe Ride Solutions (http://www.saferidesolutions.net/news.html) program.
Ironically, one of the nine teams offering this program is the San Diego Chargers organization. Wide receiver Vincent Jackson was arrested before a key playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008. He was later driven to practice by a teammate when he was unable to drive himself.
Just this week, Detroit Lions President Tom Lewand was arrested (http://www.duiattorney.com/news/7252-detroit-lions-president-lewand-arrested-for-michigan-dui)on suspicion of DUI. Byron Westbrook, cornerback for the Washington Redskins, was acquitted on charges of DUI earlier this week. This represents just a small handful of the cases brought against NFL players, from bench riders to all stars, in the past year.
NFL's Adolpho Birch, VP of player development, told the USAToday (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2010/06/paper-drunken-driving-instances-represent-28-of-nfl-player-arrests/1) anti-DUI initiatives are among the league's top priorities going forward. He commented this problem is not unique to the NFL. At a time when national DUI levels and DUI fatalities are trending down, the NFL has defied statistics by failing to significantly reduce DUI arrests among players.
The player conduct regulations in place do provide for a suspension or administrative penalty for players arrested for any reason - including DUI - during the season or in the off-season. This policy will apply even to Lewand; it applies to all members of an organization. The effect of these policies, including MADD's involvement, remains to be seen.

Is it just me or does it seem like this offseason has an absurd amount of arrests? The sports news column looks like the Police report section..

I have to wonder what make up the other 72% of arrests and the rate of convictions as well as the punishments usually seen by all of the players who are caught doing so.

Actually NFL arrest by hundred for DUI and DWI compared to the public as a whole is considerably lower. Of course if you make that sort of money it should be less, some poor Joe making 40k a year has one too many and he might be a little short for cab fare. Doesn't excuse it, but human nature being what it is we all fall short from time to time in some way or other.

And no that doesn't mean I've been driving intoxicated any time in the last 20 years, I've got a CDL to protect and cant' afford that nonsense these days. But I've got many friends I know that have occasionally strayed over the line, and they're really not evil people believe it or not. Irresponsible yes, but people who take the wheel slightly over the limit aren't always awful human beings.
