I can't help but wonder if having Max Starks back on the field (and also in the locker room) REALLY helped energize the team today.
Welcome back Max.

For Big Max to lose 50 Lbs, get back in shape and to play the entire game after just 3 practices is amazing. Get some rest big fella. We need you for the rest of the year. Take a long warm bath and get ready for the Jag-wires. I hope Gilbert's injury isn't too bad either.

How the "powers that be" within the Steelers organization didn't feel that he was needed is beyond me.

Yes, Max was a HUGE factor today. Not only for Ben's blindside, but for the entire O-Line. Yes, Ben's blindside was protected, but the pass protection improved, the run blocking improved. The whole O-Line played better.
Ben was able to hang back in the pocket and throw like nothing without having to look behind his shoulder for whatever jailbreak Jon Scott set loose. You just cannot believe how happy I am to have the big guy back. Glad to see you back Max Protect. Please stay healthy.

I agree ... we should have reached out to him earlier when Scott looked so bad, but I can't blame Tomlin and the FO for letting him go in the first place. A 400 pound Max, coming of a serious injury is not worth 7 million (5 actually).

Now just wait till he gets matched up with a speed rusher :chuckle:

A liability becomes an asset just like that.

What a game for Max the protection was real good. That's amazing considering 3 days of practice and, he plays the whole game. Actual running lanes for the rb's the offense looked pretty good today.

At 340, he is needed, but not at 390 or whatever it was he came in at. Could you imagine him trying to move with 50 more pounds on him? So he wasn't needed when a rookie or backup could move better than him, but is needed now that he is in really good shape.

Whatever it was, it worked. Starks played very well for a guy having 3 days of practice in the last 338 days. I think I'm more impressed that he had the conditioning to last all 4 quarters. GREAT effort and glad to see him back.

Amazing that he could finish the game after being out for nearly a year. Great job today, really glad he's back, as we all are.

If Gilbert's injury looks like the lingering variety should the next call go to Flozell?

They just restructured Aaron Smith's contract. I wonder if something is in the works.

I've personally always been a Max supporter...he's not at the elite level...but hes pretty good for the most part...sometimes he will struggle...but ALL players do, even the elite. There will be a games where people are going to say he struggled (say with a Speed guy)...but I'll take some struggling/etc compared to a turnstile.
As far as Max today...in warm up's when they showed him on the jumbo tron...i looked over at my dad (who went to the game with me) and said something to the effect of thats the best shape I've seen him in before...I mean he's still big...but he wasnt like...well fat i guess...i was impressed. Heres for a continued solid year for him and maybe a new (cheaper) contract for him after the season.

How so? Guy went into camp grossly overweight and coming off of neck surgery. I didn't hear anyone singing the blues when he was released. He played well today, but he's still a stopgap at this point. A long-term solution at LT still needs to be seriously addressed ASAP.

I'm glad he's back and he played well today. I hope Marcus can come back next week, I do not want Scott in there.

they are lucky the vikings didn't take him. the steelers could have kept him on the roster until he lost the weight. or they could have done some moving around to keep adams. having scott start was a very bad idea. he showed last year he cannot start. i guess it doesn't matter now because he is here.
yes, he is a temporary solution.

The Steelers saw Max Starks as "Just a temporary solution" and a "stopgap" before and it's wound up getting into this O-Line mess to begin with to sign him back. Thankfully the time off has helped Max and he's back and playing as well as he ever did.
As much as I missed him, he needed to be cut loose in TC.

Only because of his contract. If money wasn't an issue the best solution would have been to put him on the PUP list at the start of camp, and activate him when he improved his fitness level.

Gilbert was drafted to be the future LT...if Max stays around past this year (and with continued good play i think he deserves it) then maybe next year or whenever flip the 2...Max back to RT and Gilbert to LT.
