I figured we could use a thread to follow all of the big name free agant signings that are sure to come after July 8th.

Sources: Trio talk free agency scenarios

By Chris Broussard and Marc Stein
ESPN.com

A modified version of the ballyhooed free-agent summit that was initially suggested and then downplayed by Dwyane Wade has indeed taken place, ESPN.com has learned.

Sources close to the situation said Monday night that three of the biggest names in basketball -- Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James -- met over the weekend in Miami to seriously discuss their futures, with a focus on the increasingly plausible possibility of those three teaming up with Wade's Heat.

Yet sources with knowledge of the meeting stressed to ESPN.com that James, while clearly intrigued by the possibility of forming a star-studded Miami trio with Wade and Bosh, has not yet committed to leaving his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers for South Beach.

One source did label Miami as the new frontrunner to land James in a package deal with Bosh and a re-signed Wade but also cautioned that James was "non-committal" with the start of free agency fast approaching.

Sources said James remains committed to fielding free-agent pitches from several teams when free agency officially opens Thursday at 12:01 a.m. ET, with the Chicago Bulls continuing to rank as a highly appealing destination and a return to Cleveland still figuring prominently in his thinking and with the Dallas Mavericks looming as an intriguing outsider.

The Miami Herald reported Tuesday on its website that two Wade representatives deny that the meeting took place, saying that Wade was in Chicago all weekend. Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that the three players were initially drawn to Miami in conjunction with an annual two-day party and golf tournament hosted by DJ Irie -- who serves as the Heat's official team DJ -- and were seen Saturday in Miami.

Earlier Monday, Fox Sports Radio's Stephen A. Smith reported on his morning radio show and via his Twitter feed that James and Bosh have committed to joining Wade in Miami. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper, in a report on its website Monday afternoon, quoted a source close to Wade as saying that the 2006 NBA Finals MVP "believes his team is poised to pull off a free-agency coup" by signing James and Bosh and re-signing Wade.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel, in a subsequent report on its website Tuesday, quoted a source close to Wade confirming that the All-Star guard "in recent days" has addressed the possibility of playing alongside James and Bosh and that the three have discussed the "financial machinations" required to get all of them on the same roster.

Unless Miami trades away former No. 2 overall pick Michael Beasley to a team with salary-cap space, so it can avoid taking salary back, Heat president Pat Riley will not be able to offer the estimated 2010-11 maximum salary of $16.5 million to all three Team USA stars.

But sources told ESPN.com that James, Wade and Bosh all expressed confidence at the meeting that contractual complexities to make this ambitious triple signing work can be achieved, although it was not immediately clear if all three players would receive an equal amount or if one or two would receive the max. Another variable is whether Bosh would be willing to sign with the Heat outright or if he wants to hold out for a sign-and-trade.

Toronto Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo acknowledged Monday for the first time in a radio interview with the Fan590 in Toronto that "it's becoming more and more clear" that the prospect of Bosh re-signing with the Raptors is "not going to happen." But sources close to the situation have maintained for months that Bosh was likely to work with the Raptors on a sign-and-trade if he ultimately decided to leave in free agency, thereby ensuring that Toronto doesn't lose him without compensation and enabling Bosh to get an extra year on his contract potentially worth as much as $30 million.

Sources insisted, meanwhile, that other scenarios were discussed at the weekend meeting apart from the Miami plan. One source said James' admiration for Bulls legend Michael Jordan is such that he is determined to hear Chicago's pitch later this week, keeping alive the possibility that both James and Bosh could still wind up together with the Bulls.

In that scenario, sources said, James and Bosh would join Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah in Chicago, while Wade would hope to be joined in Miami by close friend Carlos Boozer, who was not at the meeting.

Sources said James, furthermore, has not ruled out staying with the Cavaliers. Although Cleveland does not have the financial flexibility or the trade assets to import Bosh or Wade and enhance its chances of retaining this summer's face of free agency, James is a proud Ohioan who is said to be still wrestling with the notion of leaving his home state, no matter how enticing the possibilities are in Miami and Chicago.

The Sun-Sentinel reported that Wade is also exploring his options by planning free-agent sitdowns in coming days with the Bulls and Mavericks. ESPN.com had previously reported that Wade and Bosh are scheduled to be in New York on Friday for separate recruiting visits with the New York Knicks and New Jersey Nets.

It was not immediately clear, as details of the Miami option emerged, whether the 65-year-old Riley intends to stay in his front-office role and let coach Erik Spoelstra return for his third season or return to the bench for a third stint coaching the Heat.

The original notion of a summit was hatched in late May, when Wade told the Chicago Tribune that he planned to talk with fellow free agents James and Joe Johnson before making a decision in free agency. It later emerged that Bosh, Boozer, Amare Stoudemire wanted to participate as well, leading to the "summit" concept.

But Wade and agent Henry Thomas insisted that a formal gathering involving all those free agents was never the intent.

"Dwyane never made reference to a summit," Thomas told CNBC.com in early June. "He said that he'd have conversations with some of these guys and that still will happen. These guys came into the league at the same time and they're in similar situations, so it's unrealistic to think that they won't talk."

James, however, left little doubt that the top free agents will discuss their futures together before July 1 in his recent interview with CNN's Larry King, telling King that he would be the "ringleader" for the conversations.

But NBA commissioner David Stern said during the NBA Finals that he would not prevent a summit if the league's top free agents -- many of them Team USA teammates -- wanted to get together.

"They can have it," Stern said, explaining that the league does not treat player-to-player interaction in the offseason in the same way it warns teams against tampering with other teams' players or pending free agents before July 1.

The NBA announced after Wade's initial comments that it only metes out discipline for player-to-player tampering in what it regards as "the most egregious" cases and said Wade's comments "do not meet that standard."

Although free-agent negotiations begin Thursday, teams and free agents are not permitted to actually execute new contracts until a leaguewide moratorium is lifted July 8.

Source: Dirk to test free agency

DALLAS (AP) -- Add Dirk Nowitzki to the bumper crop of talented free agents.

A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Nowitzki has notified the Dallas Mavericks he is opting out of the final year and $21.5 million on his existing contract. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team wasn't planning to announce Nowitzki's decision.

Mavericks president Donnie Nelson already has booked a flight that will have him overseas at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday -- 6:01 a.m. in Germany -- when free agency begins to show Nowitzki how sincere the club is about keeping its all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

He'd obviously scrap the trip if Nowitzki decides to be elsewhere, but the Mavs hope that being there sends a strong message.

"He is our No. 1 priority -- period," Nelson said.

Dallas had been discussing an extension with Nowitzki, but it would've been for only three years. He can get a four-year contract as a free agent, and perhaps a no-trade clause, something his existing deal lacks.

Nowitzki hitting the market could be a good thing for the Mavericks, but it also creates the chance he could leave, like his buddy Steve Nash did in 2004.

"We know what we hope will happen," Nelson said. "Come July 1, all kinds of unknowns may enter."

Mavs point guard Jason Kidd said last week he expects Nowitzki to stick around, but that he also wouldn't be surprised if Nowitzki allowed other teams to wine and dine him. Nowitzki has never been on the market, and was never wooed by colleges because he went straight from a German club team to the NBA as a teenager.

"In some respects, it would confuse the marketplace, push things back for us," Nelson said. "But if there's a bug inside Dirk that wants to see what that's all about, then do it."

Then again, Nowitzki is a 32-year-old former MVP who has accomplished pretty much everything but win an NBA title. He's said many times that winning it all for another team wouldn't mean as much as doing it in Dallas, and this could be a chance to do his part off the court.

A quick decision to return could turn him and Kidd into tag-team recruiters, especially for wing players like Dwyane Wade, Joe Johnson or even the biggest prize of all, LeBron James.

Getting them isn't as simple as owner Mark Cuban writing big checks.

Dallas lacks the salary cap room to sign a top-tier guy, so any major additions have to be of the sign-and-trade variety. Those require the player's existing team to be willing to make a deal, and for them to accept the Mavericks' offer over anyone else's. Dallas has plenty to offer, though, having stockpiled the kind of contracts teams are willing to take on and coming out of the draft with plenty of future picks.

It's a lot to think about, for all 30 NBA teams. In fact, the glut of options could work to Dallas' advantage; teams might prefer targeting guys who seem more ready to move than Nowitzki has been.

Then again, it only takes one team, as the Mavs learned the hard way with Nash. And Dallas has won only a single playoff series since blowing a 2-0 lead in the 2006 NBA finals.

"It's a very odd, weird, strange time," Nelson said. "If there's anything good about this process, it's as someone goes through it, the thing that comes out is what is really important to them -- whether it's location, money, winning, those types of things. Those things really, really come out."

Agent: Celtics' Pierce opting out

By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

Add one more marquee name to the most anticipated free-agent class in NBA history: Paul Pierce.

The All-Star forward has notified the Boston Celtics that he will opt out of the final year of his contract before Wednesday's deadline, which will make Pierce an unrestricted free agent for the first time.

Pierce's agent, Jeff Schwartz, confirmed the decision in a text message to ESPN.com.

By opting out, Pierce forfeits next season's $21.5 million salary and adds another layer of uncertainty to Boston's general outlook in the wake of a wholly unexpected playoff run that took them to within one win of the championship.

Ray Allen also becomes an unrestricted free agent this week, while the organization continues to wait on popular coach Doc Rivers, who has yet to decide if he wants to continue with the team or take a temporary leave from the bench grind to spend more time with family.

Pierce's name has scarcely been mentioned in the buildup to the summer 2010 free-agent bonanza because, as with Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki, most rival executives believe that the Celtics would never allow the 2008 NBA Finals MVP -- who has maintained for some time that he wants to retire a Celtic -- to leave the only team he's ever known.

Pierce, though, could wind up emerging as one of the more interesting big names to track. Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com that Pierce will begin free agency by talking first to the Celtics when the market opens at 12:01 a.m. ET Thursday, but the 32-year-old is preparing to field other offers.

External interest in Pierce is hard to forecast because his potential free agency has been widely regarded as a formality for so long and because of the heavy load he has carried for the Celtics in recent seasons. But with so many teams stockpiling significant salary-cap space for this offseason, it's conceivable that Pierce will wind up attracting multiple suitors looking for a title-tested scoring option.

Pierce just played a pivotal role in helping Boston to extend the Los Angeles Lakers to a grueling seven games in the NBA Finals, after the Celtics had previously eliminated Dwyane Wade's Miami Heat, LeBron James' Cleveland Cavaliers and Dwight Howard's Orlando Magic as the No. 4 seed in the East.

Yet it remains to be seen how much money he can command, from the Celtics or anyone else, with his 33rd birthday looming in October and the mileage he's racked up.

The most Boston can give Pierce is a four-year deal worth a maximum of $96 million, although the Celtics are naturally hoping to re-sign him for less than that as they seek to start restoring financial flexibility to infuse the roster with some youth. The maximum Pierce could receive from other teams is a four-year deal worth $93 million

Sources: Johnson likely to stay a Hawk

ESPN.com news services

The Atlanta Hawks have offered free agent Joe Johnson a maximum six-year contract worth $119 million, and sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard that Johnson is all but sure to accept.

The Hawks and Johnson's representatives met Thursday morning in Los Angeles. Since Johnson cannot sign until July 8, he'll give other teams the courtesy of hearing them out. But unless a team completely blows him away, Johnson will take the Hawks' offer, the sources said.

Johnson's representatives also are scheduled to meet with the New York Knicks and Miami Heat as well.

"We met with the Hawks and Knicks [on Wednesday] night and have heard a number of other teams with significant interest in Joe," Johnson's agent, Arn Tellem, said Thursday. "At this point, Joe has many great options to choose from. We plan to meet with the Hawks again [Thursday] to discuss the details of their offer and we hope to make a decision in the near future."

Armed with third-party intelligence that LeBron James considers Johnson a desirable potential teammate, the Knicks booked a flight to meet Johnson before traveling to Cleveland to meet with James on Thursday.

Tellem told The Associated Press on Wednesday night that Johnson has not been involved in any meetings with other free agents.

Johnson led the Hawks in scoring at 21.3 points per game.

GRIZZ KEEP GAY: Rudy Gay agreed to a five-year, $81.6 million contract with Memphis, with a player option on his fifth year, reports NBA.com's David Aldridge. Gay had scheduled a visit Thursday afternoon in Minnesota with the Timberwolves, but the Grizzlies contacted Gay's agents Thursday morning and said they now would be willing to match any offer sheet another team gave him. Gay then had no incentive to look elsewhere, and canceled his trip to Minnesota.

GOODEN GETS DEAL: Drew Gooden reached a five-year, $32 million contract with the Bucks, reports Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski. Bucks GM John Hammond and Gooden's agnet Dan Fegan cut the deal early Thursday to help solidify Milwaukee's frontline. The Bucks are still negotiating with free agent John Salmons to return.

AP source: Pierce agrees to new deal with Celtics

BOSTON (AP) -A Boston Celtics official says the team has agreed to terms with Paul Pierce on a new contract.

The official familiar with the deal spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the free agent signing period does not begin until Thursday.

Terms of the contract were not immediately available. The Boston Herald, which first reported on the deal, says Pierce would get $61 million over four years, with a mutual option for the fourth year.

Pierce has spent his entire 12-year career with the Celtics. He is second only to Larry Bird among longtime Celtics in points per game. Pierce is first in 3-pointers, second in steals, third in total points, eighth in games played and ninth in rebounds.

Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss had no comment.

Sources: Dirk, Mavs have $80M deal

By Marc Stein
ESPN.com

DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki has essentially invested some of his own money into the Dallas Mavericks.

With no guarantee the capped-out Mavericks can land the elite sidekick he seeks to keep Dallas relevant in the Western Conference, Nowitzki agreed Saturday night to give a hometown discount to the only team he's ever known, reaching terms with owner Mark Cuban on what sources close to the talks say is a four-year deal worth $80 million.

That's $16 million less than the $96 million maximum Nowitzki was eligible to receive and likely would have commanded had he been serious about shopping himself on the open market as an unrestricted free agent for the first time, given Nowitzki's stature in the league as a former MVP and the fact that his game is aging well at 32.

Nowitzki essentially ignored exploratory feelers from New Jersey and New York and stuck to his oft-cited desire to keep chasing his championship dream in Dallas, agreeing to the new pact -- which includes a no-trade clause -- after a series of wrap-up meetings that consumed much of Saturday and concluded at Cuban's house.

Shortly after the season ended with a chastening first-round exit to San Antonio, Cuban spoke hopefully of Nowitzki's willingness to consent to a "different deal" that would reduce Cuban's hefty annual luxury-tax bill and make it more palatable for him to keep pursuing expensive trades like the deal Dallas swung in February to acquire Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood and to make it easier to re-sign fellow free agent Haywood this summer.

So Nowitzki responded by potentially saving his boss $32 million if the Mavericks continue to be a luxury-tax payer for the next four seasons -- or even more if the next collective bargaining agreement, as some teams fear, comes with a tiered tax system that penalizes teams on a rising scale depending on how far they are past the tax line.

The Mavericks, though, remain well over the salary cap, restricting them to complicated sign-and-trade bids for top free agents such as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh. All Cuban could promise Nowitzki is that the financial relief he's providing will make it easier for Dallas to keep trying to swing a landscape-changing trade.

Such assurances were enough thanks largely to Nowitzki's deep Dallas roots and the close bond he and Cuban have forged through more than a decade of extreme highs and lows.

Dallas has strung together 10 consecutive 50-win seasons and Nowitzki became the NBA's first European-born MVP in 2007.

But owner and star have shared plenty of pain as well, stemming mostly from the Mavericks' collapse in the 2006 NBA Finals. The Mavericks have won only one playoff series since that capitulation to Miami after taking a 2-0 series lead. They also stand as the only franchise without an NBA championship of the four to have won 50 games for 10 or more consecutive seasons.

But Cuban has been a rock for Nowitzki during some rough periods in his off-court life, which has only cemented the bond and enabled them to weather the contentious free-agent departure of Nowitzki's best friend, Steve Nash, in the summer of 2004.

Nowitzki's longtime adviser and personal coach, Holger Geschwindner, told The Associated Press late Saturday night that Nowitzki and Cuban have agreed "to get it done."

Nowitzki can't actually sign and team officials are precluded from discussing the deal before July 8, which is the first day teams and players can execute new contracts. But having the All-Star power forward's verbal commitment enables Dallas to seriously begin its pursuit of marquee names through sign-and-trade offers, with Cuban now able to assure prospective targets that Nowitzki will be in Dallas through at least 2013-14.

The Mavericks remain hopeful that James will give them a chance to be the seventh team to make a presentation to the two-time reigning MVP, despite the fact Dallas could only acquire him if James tries to force a sign-and-trade to Texas.

Sources with knowledge of James' thinking have maintained for months that the Mavericks -- with Cuban's aggressive and player-friendly ownership, Nowitzki's presence as an ideal, floor-spreading complement to James' slashing game and James' close friend Jason Kidd leading Dallas' recruiting efforts -- can't be dismissed as a dark-horse contender to land him.

Cuban has nonetheless convinced Nowitzki that the financial sacrifice he's made will pay off for both of them, even if they don't get a shot at James and can't immediately acquire another franchise player.

Sources say that the Mavericks have identified Minnesota's Al Jefferson and Charlotte's Tyson Chandler as potential trade options, but those are secondary targets given Nowitzki's need for someone on the wings who can consistently occupy defenses, create his own offense and open things up for him.

The sides have been negotiating for weeks in the wake of Dallas' first-round playoff ouster, after team officials learned in mid-May that Nowitzki was determined to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his career as opposed to signing a three-year extension before June 30.

Nowitzki and Geschwindner were formally presented with a contract Friday and then sealed an agreement after a Saturday flurry of meetings. The discussions didn't start until the afternoon, however, to allow the ever-patriotic Nowitzki to host a morning gathering at his home in Dallas to watch Germany's quarterfinal demolition of Argentina in the World Cup.

"I think it's a great deal," Geschwindner said, according to the AP. "I like it."

The Mavericks' all-time leader in scoring and rebounding is one of three marquee free agents -- of the 10 or so available this summer -- to quickly become unavailable.

Nowitzki joins Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay, who received a five-year deal worth nearly $82 million on the first day of free agency to stay with the Grizzlies, as well as Boston Celtics guard Paul Pierce, who agreed to a four-year contract in excess of $60 million on Saturday.

Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson is also close to accepting the Hawks' $120 million offer.

Nowitzki becomes the second player in the league to secure a no-trade provision, which can only be added to new contracts -- not extensions -- when a player has at least eight years of NBA service time and four seasons with the same team. The Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant is the only player with an active no-trade clause, though Pierce is also eligible to secure one in his new deal.

No real surprises amongst the names so far...Dirk and Pierce resigning is no big shock. I expected movement amongst 4 guys...and 3 are the PF (Stat, Bosh, Lee and Rudy Gay from the wing position). Memphis opening up the checkbook was dumb IMO. Gay has serious tunnel vision with the ball in his hands...and he hasn't met a contested 15+ footer he didn't like.

Apparently Toronto is OK with Bosh coming to Cleveland in a S&T. Now it's up to Bosh.

I've seen two scenarios. One that involves Varejao/Hickson/Delonte/Parker for Bosh.
Another that invovles Jamison/Delonte/Moon/Powe for Bosh and Turkoglu.

While I don't like Turks contract, I like that trade better...because Varejao would make life easier for Bosh in the paint (Bosh is not a good post defender). Turkoglu can shoot it well enough that he and Bosh can space the floor well for Lebron...and with a starting 5 of Varejao, Bosh, Lebron, Turkoglu, Williams, we can actually run the floor pretty well. When Lebron needs to rest, Turkoglu can run the point forward position (like he did in Orlando).

All we would need then is for Mike Miller to take a Mid Level contract from the Cavs...and we're a much more dangerous team.

I think that S_inCA is referring to the decision to hold a 1 hour special TV event.

As for who Cleveland could bring in...there are rumors out west (or so I've been told) that Cleveland is looking at interest with Portland for bringing over Lamarcus Aldridge and Andre Miller for Mo Williams (who they like), JJ Hickson and more.

I think they would be making a big mistake in trading Hickson. He's a young guy on the rise and seems to have real good chemistry with LeBron.

Yea they really like him too. They may have been able to get amare last year but they pulled Hickson out of the trade and I think that might have been why it did not go through.

I dont' like the idea of getting rid of Hickson, but LMA is a better player now. If you want to bring Lebron back, you have to bring someone that can help him win Now. Not 2-3 years from now. He wants to win ASAP. Best way to do that is to get a guy in his prime that can play at a high level. Hickson still has too many "Drew Gooden" moments on both ends of the floor.

Then again, with better coaching, this years team is bound to have better results in the playoffs.

Boozer to the Bulls for 80M? I'll have to check the links on ESPN later...but Boozer makes a nice addition with Rose...especially if Rose develops a jump shot.

A buddy of mine who is a Bulls fan says that they are now targeting JJ Redick (formerly of the Orlando Magic).

A starting lineup of Noah - Boozer - Deng - Redick - Rose is actually a pretty good lineup. Rose/Boozer forms a nice Pick and Roll duo, Noah gets the mop up duties underneath the rim (and is a decent P&R guy as well), Redick helps spread the floor with his 3-point shooting and Deng gets to be a lockdown defender. It's a well rounded team capable of making some serious noise in the playoffs.
