UGH!! Sweep by the Braves.. Here we come Cubs.. We seem to have better luck against them being 5 wins and 1 lose..

Well now this is hopefully the right time for the Cubs to coming in to Pittsburgh. This team has played excellently against them all year. If they can find a way to get off to a fast start much like they have in the bulk of this year's match ups, they should be golden.

Same shit, different year. The only thing worse about this year is that they have all of this talent sitting in Indy waiting to be called up, but they still keep running jabronis like Clement, Young and Iwamura out there.

Aki will be gone after this season. Young isn't being used much other then a pinch hitter and that is ok and Clement has potential but needs time.. Clement suprises me with his HR's..

Well my guess is they're trying to make their arbitration years work in there favor. They don't want to even pay the money right now. Either way, it's time some of that talent arrives. Pedro has done his time. Give the fans hope for the future Neil Huntington.

Top of the 5th.. Cub's 1 and Bucco's ZIP.. Too many groundouts today but nothing new.. Too many errors already.. Not sure why Church didn't get that ball in the 2nd and instead of Cutch trying and missing..

Russell should of pulled Duke when the game was tied in the 6th.. But no.. He had 4 good innings and then went in the crapper... Of course the bullpen kept it close but we had no hitting..

It is really exciting to see Walker playing as good as he is. It has to be only a matter of time before they bring up Alvarez also. My question is will it be before the All Star break or after? Why not sooner rather then later?

This is a great step in the right direction for the Bucs. It seems like they have a decent bullpen that keeps them close or in games, but the hitting is just not there, but with Walker playing as well as he is now and Alvarez coming up like you said we wish sooner than later this could help them greatly!

I just heard that they are bringing up Brad Lincoln to start in Washington on Weds. Can't wait to see what he can do. Having these young kids come up helps to give me a reason to drive down town to catch a game.

It looks like some of our prospects are finally maturing and hopefully in a few years we might be able to finally field a competitive team - if they don't get traded away.

I didn't get to see the game because I was in class but I was following along on the computer...before I got caught :). ESPN has a fantastic interactive play by play program. It was almost like watching it on TV.

Jeff Clement has been optioned to Indy, and Taschner has been DFA'd. Lincoln will come up. One of the Indianapolis Indians announcers tweeted this with some people guessing Tabata may be called up. One can only hope.

Is this Tabata's final game with #Indy? He is 1-2, 2R, RBI, 2BB, 2SB (25 for 31). Tied at 5 in bot 8

and another (but unreliable) quote from TIOPS

Brad Lincoln will start tomorrow night. A ton of talk that Jose Tabata will be the other callup. Clement, Tashner reassigned

How did we get embarassed? Karsten had 58 pitches and 43 were strikes going into the Mid of the 5th.. DY hit a 2 run homer off Strasburg.. Unfortunately Karsten couldn't hold it past that.. Nat's do have some heavy hitters which are Zimmerman, Dunn and Whillingham or something spelled like that.. lol

We now have Tabata and Lincoln. It can only be a matter of time before Alvarez gets his call. I hope it's a home game.

Alvarez rampage could prompt promotion

By Bob Smizik | 3:15 p.m.

Pedro Alvarez has heard about his Indianapolis teammates Brad Lincoln and Jose Tabata being promoted to the Pirates and clearly wants to be part of it.

He's doing his talking with is bat.

Alvarez had three hits -- double, triple and home run -- and two RBIs in an Indianapolis 5-3 win over Pawtucket this afternoon.

Those hits place him second in the International League in triples with four and RBIs with 50 and third in home runs with 12. He's batting .286.

This season is a wash anyway. I just enjoy watching the occasional win and watching our promising young players play.

What I don't understand is how many people from here actually like it when they lose and always dump on them even when they do something right. I mean, this is our team. Wait until they start winning and then every one will be a fan. Just like the Pens in the late 90's before Mario came back. There were wasn't that many fans here in Pittsburgh but now everyone is.

In 2001 we ranked 17th in game attendance with a game average of 30,839. Philly ranked 24th with a game average of 22,846.

So far this year we rank 27th with an average of 17,828. Philly is ranked 1st with an average of 45, 065.

That's a decline for us by 42% (in spite of a new park that was supposed to increase attendance).

Philly's attendance almost doubled.

What I'm trying to say here is that the baseball lovers here will support the Pirates no matter what, while the average person here could care less until they start winning. Right now there is a huge bandwagon in Philly and if the situation was reversed we would have the crowds.

As a side note, this was the first year since 1997 that the Pengunis attendance was above the League average. In 2003 they averaged less then 12,000 a game. Now that attendance is up over 17,000.

Ya i feel you there for sure, but people dump on the Pirates every single day and I just take because I know they won't stop unless they have a winning season. At least myself and the few of us on here when the Buccos improve can say we stood by them all this time were true fans.

There are a LOT of baseball lovers here who don't care less until they start winning too. I'm one of them. But our beef isn't with the team, it's with management's incompetence and unwillingness to spend money to put a winning team on the field. That right there is a HUGE difference between the Pirates and Phillies, and why Phillies fans should certainly be considered bandwagon fans - because even when they stunk, they still spent more money than the Pirates to try to bring in a winner. When you lose for 17 straight seasons, you can understand why even the most die-hard fan throws his hands in the air and says the hell with it. I want to go to the ballpark and watch my team play, but as long as Bob Nutting owns the team with his penny-pinching ways, they won't get another cent from me.

As for Penguins fans, they are definitely among the biggest bandwagon fans in the league. Look at their attendance after the lockout up until their current sellout streak began in January 2007...it was awful. And that was with Crosby here for a season and a half and Malkin for half a season. Don't even get me started on the 2003-04 season, when they were averaging less than 12,000 fans a game, and on many nights they didn't even crack 10,000. I can't excuse that, because the fans knew the team was broke and couldn't afford to bring in top talent. They should have been in there supporting them anyway, and as a result the team nearly left. And in a few years when the Pens have a down year or 2, CONSOL Energy Center will be a ghost town.

That's a plus for me as I can afford to buy more tickets to go and see them... I guess I am a die-hard Pirate fan because this losing all the time is killing me but I am a little kid in a candy store when it comes to seeing them at PNC Park...

I hate Nutting and Huntington for what they have done to the Pirates. I am giving them one more chance. I am waiting to see if they will do what it takes to sign their top three draft picks and I'm waiting to see if they will keep McCutchen or will they trade him a la Jason Bay. They say they are willing to put out the cash and I'm hoping that they are not talking out of their ass.

The way I see it, the Pirates belong to us. Owners come and go but the Pirates are ours. We just have to wait out the jagoffs we now have running the team.

Yupp. It's not about the team or how they play each season its the management. Nutting is a greedy asshole who cares nothing about winning even though he would make more if this was a successful team. I don't mind going to games though because I don't feel like im fueling Nutting because $12.00 is pocket change for row A On the Left field. Ill always support the Bucco's, but if Nutting was gone the fans would appear believe that.

This article is a little dated but IMO still applicable to current situation. Huntington is a failure as GM and needs to go. Now they are saying that Alvarez might not come up tomorrow but it might be two weeks from now. I guess 8 games isn't enough. I'm not saying we would have won all of those games with Pedro but we would at least had a better chance in those close games with his hitting.

Blame Huntington, not Russell
Sunday, May 30, 2010
By Ron Cook, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

As May gets ready to turn into June and the Pirates continue their annual free fall to inconsequential oblivion, team president Frank Coonelly has yet to pick up manager John Russell's contract option for 2011 or give an extension to general manager Neal Huntington, whose contract is up after the season. I haven't heard many howls of protest from the fan base. Not one, actually. But if I'm guessing, I would think the majority wouldn't mind seeing Russell go. I get that. His comatose personality doesn't exactly generate much hope that he will inspire the team to greatness, this season or ever.

I look at it a little differently, though.

I don't think Russell is the big problem.

It's Huntington.

Certainly, if Russell is fired, he will be able to put much of the blame on Huntington. What Huntington is doing to his manager is almost criminal by insisting that second baseman Aki Iwamura stays in the lineup and first baseman Jeff Clement stays in the big leagues. He also insisted that pitcher Charlie Morton stayed in the rotation until he was placed -- conveniently, a cynic might suggest -- on the disabled list Friday with what the team described as "right shoulder fatigue."

Huntington's team-crippling actions are understandable from his point of view, I suppose. Iwamura, Clement and Morton are his guys, key players he acquired in trades. His fanny is on the line and he wants them to look good. But that doesn't change the fact he is killing the team.

And the Pirates have the nerve to preach about accountability?

Forget about accountability with the players involved.

How about a little accountability with Huntington?

Wouldn't you love to hear Huntington trying to explain to Pirates owner Bob Nutting why he's paying $4.85 million this season for Iwamura, who has the highest salary on the team? Huntington traded relief pitcher Jesse Chavez to get him during the offseason when the Tampa Bay Rays were on the verge of releasing him. Iwamura was hitting .170 through Friday, went a month between RBIs and has no range in the field, yet he is expected to keep his job for who knows how long.

Neil Walker -- not one of Huntington's guys, but a player drafted No. 1 in 2004 by previous general manager Dave Littlefield -- would be an upgrade at second base, but Huntington has said he will be used as a utility player.

I mean, why?

Clement was hitting .202 through Friday despite five hits in his past 14 at-bats. He came to the Pirates from Seattle last summer in the Jack Wilson trade, a deal in which Huntington also sent the Mariners $3.3 million to make sure Clement was included. Clement was given the first base job in spring training despite having little experience at the position and kept it far too long -- based on his production -- before Russell sent him to the bench to overhaul his batting approach with hitting coach Don Long.

Is it just me or shouldn't that overhaul have been done in the minor leagues?

Then, there's Morton, the primary acquisition in Huntington's Nate McLouth trade last June. He gave up two long home runs and four runs in the first inning of an 8-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds Thursday night, then three more runs in the second inning after a throwing error by third baseman Andy LaRoche, another Huntington trade pick-up who has been a disappointment at the plate and, this season, in the field. Morton's record is 1-9, his ERA 9.35. He should have been in the minors a month ago trying to figure out his game.

Sending a guy out doesn't mean the organization is giving up on him. Often, it helps save his career. Beyond that, why not give Brad Lincoln a chance and see what he can do? Oh, that's right. Lincoln was drafted No. 1 by Littlefield in '06.

At least Huntington agreed to put Morton on the disabled list and didn't force Russell to give him another start. Keeping Morton in the rotation isn't fair to Morton; the weight of the numbers he's lugging around could crush him. It also isn't fair to his teammates; they feel as if they're beaten before the game starts when he takes the mound.

Can you say demoralizing?

I imagine Russell can say it, but that's not his style. A lot of people think he has been a fool for playing Iwamura and Clement and starting Morton. I'm not among them. Russell is no fool. I believe he's doing what he has been told to do and trying to make the best of the poor-performing players he has been given. He's a good, loyal company man who appreciates being -- at least for now -- one of 30 big league managers, even if it's with a ghastly franchise.

That's why Russell will never speak the truth about this Pirates issue. So I'll say it for him here this morning. Huntington is sabotaging him, the team and the season.

Since that article, Walker has been given the 2nd base job and has done very well; Lincoln and Tabata have also been called up. Clement has been sent to the minors. Alvarez is on the way, which means Andy LaRoche will be relegated to the utility player that he is. And when Steve Pearce is healthy, he will be with the big club, which means Aki may be on his way out. All of this should have been done a month ago, but then again, we're talking about the Pirates and their pathetic excuse for management. I can't really blame Russell either - he's been given chicken shit and was expected to turn it into chicken salad. I will give Huntington credit for drafting Alvarez, Sanchez (who should be here by 2012 at the the earliest, the way he is going) and Taillon (who should be a stud if he stays healthy and improves), but other than that...blah. Those draft picks are the only thing keeping him out of the unemployment line right now. If he screws up Taillon's signing, though, he'd better pack his bags.

Lincoln is going to be a good pitcher - it's his 2nd major-league start. Not everyone can be Stephen Strasburg, who BTW also struggled in his 2nd start. Tabata is going to be a very good LF. Cutch is only good at baserunning? I guess that .314 average isn't good enough for you? Cutch and Alvarez are going to be the cornerstones of this franchise for years to come, but I think many of the fans are putting way too high of expectations on them so early in their careers. Give them time and let them develop.

If you want to blame guys for not hitting, you can start with stiffs like Church, Young, LaRoche and Cedeno constantly shitting the bed when they're at the plate, yet somehow continue to get a lot of playing time. Cutch, Walker, Jones and to a lesser extent Doumit are all hitting fairly well.

Oh yes Lincoln, Cutch, Tabata, Walker and soon to be Alvarez is what this team is going to build around for many seasons. No one can expect them to be great just yet and I know once Lincoln settles down and get 5 starts under his belt he will be consistent and productive. Alvarez will take over for LaRoche(thank god) because he is just a bum on third base and can't hit worth shit. Im excited for the future these young talents look promising.

I have to admit, I am too. My biggest worry is what Herr Nutting will do if and when all of these guys develop into the star players we all hope. Will he do as he's promised and spend the money to keep them here, or will they all be the latest of an endless cycle of trading legitimate talent for crap? If you picked option 1...well, I just hope you're right. I think option 2 is the more likely scenario. I don't trust that greedy bastard as much as I can throw him.

Anyway, now that Alvarez is here, what do you do with the lineup? Should be interesting to see what Russell does. Here's how I'd do it:

Tabata LF
Walker 2B
Cutch CF
Jones 1B
Alvarez 3B
Doumit C
Milledge RF
Cedeno SS

Pirates Put Fired Pierogi Back in the Game
Wednesday, June 23, 2010
Posted By Andy Hutchins 3:05 P

On Sunday, when I wrote about the Pittsburgh Pirates firing a man who played their pierogi mascot, I wrote: "At some point, I believe that sports teams and other public figures will figure out that criticism and dissent are usually good things, when they are treated with the proper level of respect. Clearly, the Pirates aren't quite there yet." I may have been a bit premature.

Andrew Kurtz, one of the men who perform as a racing pierogi during Pirates' home games, has been rehired by the team after management determined that "he should not have been fired" for posting a disparaging remark about the team on the Internet.

"The employee has been rehired because he was not terminated in accordance with company [human resources] procedures," Brian Warecki, the team's communications director, said in an e-mail Tuesday night. "While his conduct was in violation of our company policy (and many other companies), it was not subject to termination at this time."

Score a point for employees' freedom of speech extending to their online presences! Woo, rights!

In seriousness, Kurtz' original post wasn't as egregious as the Philadelphia Eagles employee who blasted that team last year, but the Pirates deserve some praise—and a rollback of some of the rhetoric directed at them—because it seems like they understand their mistake was taking any action at all. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Kurtz was actually rehired on Saturday morning, and that the PR firestorm had no effect on the decision.

It's a nice thing to know that the Pirates aren't as shortsighted as initially thought. But now that Kurtz has his job back, he might want the Pirates to start getting good again, like he wanted when he posted that status. It would be an appropriate coda to this saga.

Doesn't surprise me that Nutting is the most disliked person... We have a 16 road game losing streak going and hopefully it will be broken here soon. Can't wait for the Pirates to be good again one day...

Losing is one thing. The game last night was just an embarrassment. I really don't know how they can cash their pay checks in good conscious.

Now I know how Mets fans felt in 1962 but at least they had Casey Stengel. Look who we have.

4 errors is just not suppose to happen to a MLB team and watching it is embarrassing. I can't believe it, it doesn't even look like an effort anymore.

Like I posted in another forum. They need to treat the rest of this season as an extended Spring Training and get back to learning the fundamentals of baseball. They are making too many mistakes that a good High School Team wouldn't make.

If they start playing solid baseball then the wins will come. They have lost too many games due to stupid mistakes. What happened last night has happened too many times this year.

I really do not see us doing well against the Cubs in this coming series. I know we are 7-2 but with what I have seen against a below avg team this weekend we made them look like Yankees... I'm really not sure If I want to come back out to Pittsburgh for the Phillies series this weekend.. If we wouldn't have had all those errors yesterday we would have won atleast that one... Nice homer by Milledge.. FINALLY!!

My favorite team is the Boston red sox but it is unfortunate that it happens among the pirates.

In football, Baltimore and Pittsburgh are the best rivalry in the NFL for several years, but in baseball, his 2 teams are really bad for 15 years.

It must be embarrassing lot!

Yep...turned the game on, saw it was 11-2...and turned it right back off.

Without any quality pitching, the Pirates will never, ever win a damn thing. Look at the Padres - very little power, don't score a lot of runs, yet they have the best record in the NL. Why? Pitching. Best ERA in the NL. THAT'S what wins you games.

It was funny how I left my GF grandparents in the top of the 7th and got to her parents down the road and turned the TV on and saw 5 - 3, a man on 2nd and 3rd with no outs... I ran out side yelling to the family what was going on.. Half Phillie/Yankee fans... Just 2 of us Pirate fans there.... I think Pedro might just be ready to go now... Pirates' sloppy loss raises heat on Russell
Astros capitalize on lapses, 5-2, to extend latest seven-game slide
Saturday, July 17, 2010
By Dejan Kovacevic, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It was a manager's nightmare, on so many levels.

John Russell had described the Pirates as "energized" coming out of the All-Star break, but they made an excruciating fundamental mess of their 5-2 loss to the Houston Astros Friday night at PNC Park, with butchery on the basepaths, on the mound, in the field ... pretty much everywhere except where the 23,723 were booing.

It was Houston's first batter stealing second and third.

A wild pitch leading to the next run.

A balk that led to another.

A botched rundown.

One of their own runners getting picked off second by the catcher.

Not the kind of game Russell had envisioned out of the break?

That's just what needs to be at it's best, the pitching. Our hitting game is good enough to get us wins with an excellent lineup IMO. With Alvarez, Tabata, Walker, Cutch, Millage, and Jones all hitting strong and Doumit I like our offense, but the pitching and bullpen is always what kills us. So any night our pitchers have a good game it's excellent news!
